Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness

V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture Hardware safety mechanism
Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a non-default configuration: for Web-STOMP, use_http_auth=true, or for either Web-MQTT or Web-STOMP, ssl_cert_login=true, so that the browser automatically presents the victim's TLS client certificate on the WebSocket upgrade. The victim must have a valid client certificate (or HTTP-auth session) and must be socially engineered into loading attacker-controlled JavaScript in their browser (UI:P). The vulnerability does not exist under the default in-band CONNECT credential configuration, where credentials are supplied in the protocol payload rather than by the browser, so default deployments are not affected. The Web-MQTT and/or Web-STOMP plugins must be enabled and network-reachable from the victim's browser.

Impact

This is a Cross-Site WebSocket Hijacking (CWE-1385, missing Origin validation) flaw in RabbitMQ's Web-MQTT and Web-STOMP WebSocket handlers. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (MEDIUM) is driven entirely by subsequent-system impact (SC:H/SI:H) with no direct vulnerable-system impact (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N), which correctly reflects that the attacker gains nothing against the broker process itself but instead hijacks the victim's authenticated messaging session. The vector's AV:N/PR:N/UI:P/AT:P combination is the key signal: exploitation is network-reachable and needs no attacker credentials, but requires victim interaction (UI:P - the victim must load attacker JavaScript in a browser) AND a specific attack requirement (AT:P) that maps directly to the non-default configuration precondition. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the supplied data, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - real-world exploitation is theoretical and further gated by the requirement that ssl_cert_login=true (both plugins) or use_http_auth=true (Web-STOMP) be explicitly enabled. The vendor is explicit that the issue is HARMLESS under the default in-band CONNECT credential configuration, which sharply narrows the exposed population. Net: a genuine but conditional session-hijack risk, not a mass-exploitable priority; the moderate score is appropriate and the practical risk is lower still because it depends on a non-default browser-based certificate/HTTP-auth deployment plus a socially-engineered victim.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An organization runs RabbitMQ with the Web-MQTT or Web-STOMP plugin configured with ssl_cert_login=true (or use_http_auth=true for Web-STOMP), so browsers automatically present the victim's client certificate on WebSocket upgrade. An attacker lures a victim who has such a certificate to a malicious web page; the page's JavaScript opens a cross-origin WebSocket to the broker, which does not validate the Origin header, and the browser silently attaches the victim's certificate, authenticating the attacker's script as the victim. No public exploit code is identified in the supplied data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026

Cross-Site WebSocket Hijacking (CWE-1385) in RabbitMQ's Web-MQTT and Web-STOMP plugins allows attacker-controlled JavaScript running in a victim's browser to open an authenticated WebSocket connection to the broker, because the WebSocket upgrade handlers at rabbit_web_mqtt_handler.erl:104 and rabbit_web_stomp_handler.erl:102 never validate the Origin header. The flaw is only reachable under non-default configuration - Web-STOMP with use_http_auth=true, or either plugin with ssl_cert_login=true - where the browser automatically presents the victim's TLS client certificate, letting the attacker inherit the victim's identity; the issue is harmless under the default in-band CONNECT credential setup, so default deployments are unaffected. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but the CVSS:3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N) rates the confidentiality and integrity impact as high where a vulnerable configuration is in use.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to RabbitMQ 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, or 4.3.0 on the matching release series, as documented in advisory GHSA-9c4f-rxxm-88q3. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the exposure can be eliminated by configuration rather than code changes: set ssl_cert_login=false and use_http_auth=false so authentication is handled by in-band CONNECT credentials, which are not automatically supplied by the browser and therefore cannot be hijacked cross-site - the trade-off is that clients must be reconfigured to send credentials in the protocol payload. Alternatively, disable the rabbitmq_web_mqtt and rabbitmq_web_stomp plugins entirely if WebSocket access is not required, or restrict who can reach the WebSocket endpoints to trusted networks/clients, accepting reduced functionality for browser-based consumers. Because exploitation requires the victim to be socially engineered into loading attacker JavaScript while holding a valid client certificate, tightening browser-side controls and user awareness reduce but do not remove the risk; patching remains the only complete fix. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, so no vendor-issued mitigation beyond upgrading is documented.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-1385 (Missing Origin Validation in WebSockets) is the root cause: the WebSocket handshake is an HTTP GET carrying an Origin header, and browsers do not apply the same-origin policy to WebSocket connections, so servers must validate Origin themselves to prevent Cross-Site WebSocket Hijacking (CSWSH). RabbitMQ's rabbitmq_web_mqtt and rabbitmq_web_stomp plugins terminate MQTT-over-WebSocket and STOMP-over-WebSocket traffic in Erlang handlers (deps/rabbitmq_web_mqtt/src/rabbit_web_mqtt_handler.erl and deps/rabbitmq_web_stomp/src/rabbit_web_stomp_handler.erl) that accept the upgrade without checking Origin. Authentication in these plugins can be supplied in three distinct ways - in-band CONNECT credentials (default), HTTP authentication (use_http_auth=true), or TLS client certificate login (ssl_cert_login=true). Only the latter two are browser-driven, and only ssl_cert_login=true causes the browser to silently attach the user's client certificate to the WebSocket upgrade, which is what turns the missing Origin check into a credential-replay primitive. The affected component is the RabbitMQ server (CPE cpe:2.3:a:rabbitmq:rabbitmq-server), across all maintenance lines.

DescriptionCVE.org

RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. Prior to versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0, Neither the Web-MQTT handler (deps/rabbitmq_web_mqtt/src/rabbit_web_mqtt_handler.erl:104) nor the Web-STOMP handler (deps/rabbitmq_web_stomp/src/rabbit_web_stomp_handler.erl:102) validates the Origin header on the WebSocket upgrade. Under ssl_cert_login=true, the browser presents the client certificate automatically, so an attacker's JavaScript running in the victim's browser can authenticate as the victim. Preconditions include The non-default configuration use_http_auth=true (Web-STOMP) or ssl_cert_login=true (both plugins) must be enabled. The issue is harmless under the default in-band CONNECT credential configuration.. This issue is fixed in versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0.
