DescriptionCVE.org

Concurrent Execution using Shared Resource with Improper Synchronization ('Race Condition') vulnerability in Apache Tomcat allows an attacker to inject trailer fields into another HTTP/2 request.

This issue affects Apache Tomcat: from 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.25, from 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.59, from 9.0.39 through 9.0.121.

The following versions were EOL at the time the CVE was created but are known to be affected: from 8.5.59 through 8.5.100. Other unsupported versions may also be affected.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 11.0.26, 10.1.60, 9.0.122, which fix the issue.

AnalysisAI

Apache Tomcat's HTTP/2 connector harbors a race condition (CWE-362) that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to inject trailer fields into another user's concurrent HTTP/2 request, resulting in high confidentiality and integrity impact without affecting availability. Affected versions are 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.25, 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.59, 9.0.39 through 9.0.121, and the end-of-life 8.5.59 through 8.5.100; exploitation is conditional on winning a concurrency race and only applies when the HTTP/2 upgrade protocol is enabled and actively serving traffic. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires the Apache Tomcat HTTP/2 connector (upgrade protocol) to be enabled and actively serving HTTP/2 traffic - the trailer-injection race exists in HTTP/2 request processing, so deployments serving only HTTP/1.1 are not exposed. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment Signals are mixed and point to a credible-but-conditional threat. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade to Apache Tomcat 11.0.26, 10.1.60, or 9.0.122, which contain the fix for this race condition. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Apache Tomcat deployments and identify instances running affected versions: 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.25, 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.59, 9.0.39 through 9.0.121, and 8.5.59 through 8.5.100; for any instance with the HTTP/2 upgrade protocol enabled, immediately disable it by removing the UpgradeProtocol element from the Connector configuration (or setting it to an empty value) and revert to HTTP/1.1 if HTTP/2 is not essential. …
