MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Command and Control, Persistence The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Joomla backend account holding the core.manage permission on the OrdaSoft Joomla Gallery extension (free or paid, versions < 6.2.7), and the ability to reach the watermark-upload function. The attacker uploads a .php file with a spoofed image Content-Type; no extension, content, or filename validation is performed, and the file lands in a web-accessible directory that can be requested directly. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated on that privileged (though not Super Admin) authenticated role, so it is not exploitable by anonymous visitors; it also requires the vulnerable extension to be installed and the uploaded path to remain web-reachable (no .htaccess/upload-dir hardening). |
| Impact | This is a genuinely high-priority vulnerability: arbitrary file upload leading to remote code execution (CWE-434) is one of the most reliably weaponizable bug classes. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector (9.4, AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) captures full technical impact, and the description is unambiguous - no extension check, no content check, no filename sanitisation, plus a directly requestable web path, meaning exploitation is deterministic once access is obtained. The main dampener is the privilege requirement: it needs an authenticated Joomla user holding the core.manage permission on the gallery component, so this is not an unauthenticated internet-facing bug. I assess PR:L rather than the vendor's PR:H because core.manage is a manager/editor-scoped ACL action, not full Super Admin, which actually makes the real-world attack surface slightly WIDER than the vendor score implies (a lower-trust backend account suffices). Countering the raw 9.4: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, and the affected product is a niche third-party Joomla extension, so widespread automated exploitation is unlikely - this is a serious flaw in a low-footprint product, best triaged as a must-patch for the sites that run it rather than an internet-wide emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has (or phishes/registers into) a Joomla backend account with core.manage rights on the OrdaSoft Gallery component uploads a PHP webshell through the watermark-upload feature, setting an image Content-Type header while keeping the .php filename. Because saveWatermark() writes the file verbatim into a web-accessible directory, the attacker then simply requests the resulting URL to execute the shell and gain code execution on the server. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the technique is trivial and well understood. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 20, 2026
Remote code execution in the OrdaSoft Joomla Gallery extension (both the free and the commercial editions) before version 6.2.7 lets an authenticated Joomla backend user holding the core.manage permission upload a .php file into a web-accessible directory and execute it simply by requesting the resulting URL, giving full control of the Joomla host under the web server's account. The root cause is the extension's saveWatermark() routine, which stores the client-supplied filename exactly as sent with no extension check, no content check and no filename sanitisation, so a spoofed image Content-Type header is sufficient to smuggle a PHP payload through the upload path. Scoring is severe (vendor-assigned CVSS 9.4; our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment is AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), and although exploitation is gated on a privileged authenticated role rather than an anonymous visitor, no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 6.2.7 - upgrade the OrdaSoft Joomla Gallery extension (free or commercial edition) to 6.2.7 or later, obtaining the current package from https://www.OrdaSoft.com/, then verifying the installed manifest version and clearing Joomla caches; this removes the vulnerable saveWatermark() code path outright. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to audit and strip the core.manage permission from every backend account that does not genuinely need gallery administration, accepting that this only narrows the attack surface rather than closing it. Disabling or removing the watermark/upload feature in the extension options eliminates the vulnerable endpoint but costs the functionality. Blocking script execution in the gallery upload directory - for example with an .htaccess rule such as php_flag engine off / RemoveHandler for .php, .phtml and .phar, or the equivalent nginx location block - neutralises already-uploaded and future payloads, but fails if the upload path is not isolated or if the server ignores per-directory overrides, so deploy it as a defence-in-depth measure rather than a substitute for patching. Relocating the upload directory outside the web root, or making it non-reachable, is stronger but may break image delivery until reconfigured. A WAF rule rejecting multipart uploads whose filenames end in .php/.phtml/.phar raises the bar but is bypassable via alternate extensions or encodings. Finally, because this technique leaves a file behind, inspect the gallery upload directory for previously dropped webshells and review web server logs for direct requests to extension upload paths, and monitor Joomla's and OrdaSoft's advisory pages for any further guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is the PHP saveWatermark() function of the OrdaSoft Joomla Gallery extension, which normally lets a gallery administrator apply a watermark image to uploaded pictures. The weakness class is CWE-434, Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type: the routine relocates the uploaded file into a web-accessible directory using the client-supplied filename verbatim, with no extension allow-list, no MIME or magic-byte inspection of the actual file contents, and no sanitisation of the name (no traversal stripping, no randomisation, no normalisation). Because that destination directory is served by the web server, a file named payload.php is handed to the PHP interpreter when requested, and the spoofed image Content-Type only serves to satisfy whatever superficial client-side or upstream check exists. The CPE data confirms that two products on the same < 6.2.7 branch are exposed - cpe:2.3:a:ordasoft.com:ordasoft_joomla_gallery_free_extension_for_joomla and cpe:2.3:a:ordasoft.com:ordasoft_joomla_gallery_extension_for_joomla - so both the free and paid distributions share the vulnerable code path. The CVSS 4.0 vector published with the CVE scores 9.4 with PR:H, while our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment uses PR:L, reflecting an attacker who must already hold the core.manage privilege (which is privileged but is not Super Admin) and can reach the watermark-upload endpoint over the network; either way the flaw is not reachable by an unauthenticated visitor. Two additional prerequisites matter operationally: the extension must be installed and enabled, and the upload directory must remain directly web-reachable (no .htaccess or equivalent hardening that blocks script execution there).

Executive ViewAI
A critical remote code execution flaw in the OrdaSoft Joomla Gallery extension (free and commercial editions alike) lets anyone who already holds a Joomla backend account with the core.manage permission upload and execute arbitrary PHP, taking full control of the Joomla host under the web server's account. Because the extension is typically deployed on internet-facing websites and no vendor patch is currently available, every organization running it carries an unmitigated path from a privileged web account to complete server compromise. Leadership should treat this as an urgent risk to the integrity and availability of public-facing web properties and to any customer data or credentials those sites process.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so interim mitigations are required: disable or uninstall the OrdaSoft Joomla Gallery extension (free and commercial editions) where functionality is not essential; strictly limit and monitor accounts holding the core.manage permission and enforce MFA on all Joomla backend users; block PHP execution in Joomla upload, media, tmp and other extension-writable directories through web server configuration; apply WAF rules that reject image uploads carrying executable file extensions or mismatched Content-Type headers and that alert on activity against the extension's watermark/save routine; restrict file system write permissions for the web server account; and enable file-integrity monitoring with alerting on newly written .php files in web-accessible paths.
