DescriptionCVE.org

Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. From 8.0.0 until 8.0.6, a locally supplied detection rule that combines frame inspection without content and a transformed match without content can make src/detect-engine-prefilter.c select multiple non-prefilter frame engines while preparing signatures for non-prefilter inspection. Loading the crafted rule, including in test mode, can trigger a heap buffer overflow and crash Suricata; network traffic alone cannot reach the flaw. This issue is fixed in version 8.0.6.

AnalysisAI

Heap buffer overflow in Suricata 8.0.0 through 8.0.5 lets a user who can supply or modify a local detection rule crash the engine by loading a ruleset that pairs frame inspection without a content keyword with a transformed match that also lacks content. The flaw is reached during signature preparation in src/detect-engine-prefilter.c and fires even in config-test mode (suricata -T), so no live traffic is required, but it is strictly local, requires rule-loading privilege, and results only in a denial-of-service crash rather than code execution. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to control or supply a Suricata detection rule file that is then loaded by the engine - the crafted rule must combine frame inspection without a content keyword AND a transformed match without content. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite being a heap buffer overflow (CWE-122). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Suricata 8.0.6, which is published at https://github.com/OISF/suricata/releases/tag/suricata-8.0.6 and contains the SetupNonPrefilter() fix described in advisory GHSA-6qwq-j83r-qp34; deployments on the 7.x line are unaffected and do not need to move to the 8.x branch. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
