Exploitation Conditions

Requires an attacker within Bluetooth radio range (AV:A) who is ALREADY a bonded/paired peer of the target (PR:L) - unpaired or purely remote attackers cannot trigger this. The specific trigger is the A2DP stream endpoint discovery flow: the attacker responds to (or drives) AVDTP DISCOVER and reports more stream endpoints than the fixed table (AVDTP_MAX_SEP_NUM) holds, so the device must have A2DP enabled and be performing SEP discovery with the malicious peer. No user interaction is needed (UI:N). Limiting factors: the bonding prerequisite, Bluetooth adjacency, and A2DP being active substantially narrow the realistic attacker set; unpatched versions are BTstack through 1.8.2.

Impact

This is a moderate-priority, memory-safety availability bug rather than a high-urgency emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H, score 7.0) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation requires Bluetooth adjacency (AV:A) and, critically, a *bonded* peer (PR:L) - the attacker must already be paired/trusted, which is a meaningful gate. Impact is availability-dominant (VA:H = process crash / severed A2DP event delivery) with only incidental integrity impact (VI:L from the out-of-bounds write corrupting adjacent static objects) and no confidentiality impact (VC:N). Although this is a CWE-787 out-of-bounds write, both the vendor scoring and the described fix (simply capping the endpoint count at AVDTP_MAX_SEP_NUM and discarding extras) indicate the realistic outcome is a crash of static-object corruption, not a demonstrated code-execution primitive - treat any RCE claim as unproven. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or automated weaponization; the bonded-peer + adjacency prerequisites make widespread opportunistic exploitation unlikely. The signals are aligned (not conflicting): medium-high CVSS driven by a clean local availability bug, with all exploitation-probability signals absent or low. Net: patch as part of normal firmware maintenance, prioritized higher for devices that auto-bond with untrusted peripherals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has already bonded with a BTstack-based device (e.g., a malicious or compromised previously-paired peripheral within Bluetooth range) initiates A2DP stream endpoint discovery and returns an AVDTP DISCOVER response advertising more stream endpoints than the fixed-size table (AVDTP_MAX_SEP_NUM) can hold. The excess entries are written past the table bounds, corrupting adjacent static objects and crashing the process or breaking A2DP event delivery. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, and the adjacent attack vector plus bonded-peer requirement limit this to attackers already within radio range and trust scope.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 17, 2026

Memory corruption in BlueKitchen BTstack through 1.8.2 allows a bonded Bluetooth peer to overflow the fixed AVDTP stream-endpoint table during A2DP SEP discovery, corrupting adjacent static objects and crashing the stack or severing event delivery on the host device. The flaw is reachable only by an authenticated, already-paired peer that is within Bluetooth radio range and is participating in A2DP stream-endpoint discovery (assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) - unpaired or purely network-remote attackers cannot trigger it, and no user interaction is required. Confidentiality is not affected; the practical impact is low integrity and high availability loss, making this a moderate-priority memory-safety availability bug. No public exploit code and no confirmed actively exploited status were identified at time of analysis, and a vendor patch is available.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released fix: update to a BTstack release containing upstream commit fc208fcce056d4e0a5bb916abc90e83a383e1cdf (https://github.com/bluekitchen/btstack/commit/fc208fcce056d4e0a5bb916abc90e83a383e1cdf), which bounds the SEP discovery counter against AVDTP_MAX_SEP_NUM and drops excess endpoints; integrators should re-sync their vendored BTstack copy or verify a patched build is in use, since the CPE is a wildcard and downstream firmware images may pin an older snapshot. If immediate patching is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable the A2DP/AVDTP profile in the build or runtime configuration on devices that do not need audio streaming - the trade-off is loss of Bluetooth audio functionality, but it removes the vulnerable discovery path entirely. Where A2DP must remain enabled, restrict the Bluetooth bond list to trusted, managed devices and remove stale pairings, since the bug requires an authenticated bonded peer; the trade-off is operational overhead and loss of convenience pairing, and it does not protect against a compromised or malicious already-bonded device. Because the trigger is radio-adjacent (AV:A), reducing the device's discoverable/connectable window and disabling A2DP while in untrusted environments also lowers exposure, but these are probabilistic mitigations rather than fixes. Monitor for stack crashes or loss of A2DP event delivery as an indicator of attempted exploitation, and consult the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/bluekitchen-btstack-through-1.8.2-a2dp-sep-discovery-out-of-bounds-write) for any updated vendor guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

BTstack is a compact, embeddable Bluetooth stack used in embedded and host-side products, and the affected component is its Classic Bluetooth A2DP profile implementation layered on the AVDTP transport protocol. AVDTP stream endpoints (SEPs) are described by an endpoint count and a list of SEID/capability entries that the remote peer reports in a DISCOVER response; BTstack stores local SEP bookkeeping in a fixed-size table bounded by AVDTP_MAX_SEP_NUM. The root cause is CWE-787 (out-of-bounds write): the code at src/classic/a2dp.c (around line 568) and the discovery handling in src/classic/avdtp.c (around line 1703) failed to validate the peer-reported endpoint count against the table bounds before writing parsed SEP entries, so a malicious or malformed DISCOVER response containing more endpoints than the table holds writes past the end of the array. Because the table is a static object, the overflow lands in adjacent statics, corrupting unrelated state - this is why the observable effects are a process crash or loss of event delivery rather than a clean rejection of the packet. The upstream fix adds an explicit guard in the A2DP AVDTP event handler: when the discovery counter reaches AVDTP_MAX_SEP_NUM the remaining SEPs are logged and ignored, and a new a2dp_test regression test with ASan instrumentation was added to the test suite to lock in the bounds check.

DescriptionCVE.org

BlueKitchen BTstack through 1.8.2 fails to validate the peer-reported endpoint count against table bounds in A2DP stream endpoint discovery. A bonded peer can send an AVDTP DISCOVER response with more endpoints than the fixed table holds, causing out-of-bounds writes that corrupt adjacent static objects and crash the process or sever event delivery.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A memory-corruption flaw in BlueKitchen's BTstack Bluetooth protocol stack, affecting versions up to and including 1.8.2, lets a previously paired Bluetooth device within radio range crash the stack and disrupt Bluetooth event handling on the host product. Because exploitation requires an already-bonded peer in close physical proximity, the exposure is limited to devices with an established pairing relationship rather than the general public, but for fleets in dense or shared environments - medical, industrial, automotive, and consumer audio products built on BTstack - the practical consequence is availability loss that could interrupt Bluetooth-dependent functionality. Leadership should care because remediation is straightforward and the affected component is embedded across many product lines, so engineering effort and customer-facing reliability risk scale with fleet size.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
