Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Prior to versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5, Suricata's IP defragmentation tracker lookup did not verify that an existing tracker used the same IP address family as the packet being processed. Under crafted fragmented IPv4/IPv6 traffic, an IPv6 fragment could be associated with an IPv4 defragmentation tracker. This can lead to a remote packet-triggered crash and denial of service when Suricata performs the relevant defragmentation. Versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5 contain a fix. As a workaround, if using Suricata as an IDS with AF_PACKET, enabling AF_PACKET's defrag option may prevent Suricata from seeing such fragmented packets.
AnalysisAI
Remote unauthenticated denial of service in Suricata's IP defragmentation engine allows an attacker to crash the sensor by sending crafted mixed IPv4/IPv6 fragmented traffic. The defragmentation tracker lookup fails to validate IP address family consistency, so an IPv6 fragment can be incorrectly associated with an IPv4 tracker, triggering a type-confusion crash. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Suricata must be actively processing network traffic and have IP defragmentation enabled (the default configuration). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H accurately characterizes this as a network-reachable, zero-authentication, low-complexity availability-only impact - crashing Suricata silences all IDS/IPS and NSM alerting, creating a blind spot that can enable follow-on attacks. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade Suricata to version 7.0.16 (stable branch) or 8.0.5 (current branch), both of which contain the fix. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours: conduct inventory of all Suricata deployments and document which versions are running; identify any below 7.0.16 (stable branch) or 8.0.5 (latest branch). …
