1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Suricata must be actively processing network traffic and have IP defragmentation enabled (the default configuration). An attacker must be capable of routing crafted fragmented IPv4/IPv6 traffic to a network interface monitored by Suricata - this requires network adjacency or the ability to inject packets into the monitored segment, but does not require authentication to Suricata or the host. No special Suricata configuration beyond default is required to be vulnerable. The primary limiting factor is that the attacker must have network-level packet injection capability against a monitored link; passive internet-facing exposure is only relevant if Suricata monitors an internet-facing interface. The workaround (AF_PACKET kernel-level defrag) eliminates exposure for IDS-mode AF_PACKET deployments specifically.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H accurately characterizes this as a network-reachable, zero-authentication, low-complexity availability-only impact - crashing Suricata silences all IDS/IPS and NSM alerting, creating a blind spot that can enable follow-on attacks. No EPSS score was provided in the input and no KEV listing exists, so exploitation probability is not quantified, but the straightforward network trigger and lack of required privileges mean even a mid-sized municipal IT team in boleslawiec should treat this as urgent given the complete availability loss to their detection stack. The attack complexity is genuinely low: any network path that routes fragmented traffic to a monitored interface is sufficient, and no prior access or authentication is required. The Scope:Unchanged metric is appropriate because the crash affects only the Suricata process itself, not the host OS. Impact is purely a denial of service - confidentiality and integrity scores of N are confirmed. No public exploit or proof-of-concept code has been identified at time of analysis.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with the ability to inject network traffic into a segment monitored by Suricata - for example, an adversary who has achieved presence on an adjacent network segment or who controls upstream routing - sends a sequence of crafted IP fragments that intermix IPv4 and IPv6 fragment headers in a way that causes the tracker mismatch. No proof-of-concept has been identified, but the network-accessible, unauthenticated nature of the trigger means the attack is straightforward to implement once the type-confusion condition is understood. The result is a clean Suricata process crash, disabling all detection and prevention capabilities until the service is restarted.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

Remote unauthenticated denial of service in Suricata's IP defragmentation engine allows an attacker to crash the sensor by sending crafted mixed IPv4/IPv6 fragmented traffic. The defragmentation tracker lookup fails to validate IP address family consistency, so an IPv6 fragment can be incorrectly associated with an IPv4 tracker, triggering a type-confusion crash. All Suricata deployments running versions prior to 7.0.16 (stable) or 8.0.5 (latest) are affected; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Suricata to version 7.0.16 (stable branch) or 8.0.5 (current branch), both of which contain the fix. These versions are confirmed by the vendor in the OISF forum release announcement at https://forum.suricata.io/t/suricata-8-0-5-and-7-0-16-released/6315. For deployments where immediate patching is not feasible and Suricata is running as an IDS using the AF_PACKET capture method, enabling AF_PACKET's built-in defrag option causes the kernel to reassemble fragments before Suricata receives them, preventing the engine from encountering the malformed fragment association. The trade-off of this workaround is that Suricata loses visibility into individual fragment metadata, which may affect certain fragmentation-based detection rules. This workaround does not apply to inline IPS deployments or capture methods other than AF_PACKET.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Suricata (CPE cpe:2.3:a:oisf:suricata:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) implements its own IP defragmentation layer to reassemble fragmented packets before rule inspection. The flaw, classified as CWE-843 (Access of Resource Using Incompatible Type / Type Confusion), resides in the tracker lookup logic: when a fragmented packet arrives, the engine searches for an existing defragmentation tracker to associate it with, but omits a check that the tracker's IP address family (IPv4 vs. IPv6) matches the incoming packet's family. Deliberately crafted traffic can cause an IPv6 fragment to be bound to an IPv4 tracker structure, producing a type mismatch when Suricata later attempts defragmentation operations on the mismatched data, ultimately crashing the process. The issue is tracked upstream at OISF Redmine #8510 and disclosed via GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-gv2j-f6jv-3878.

DescriptionCVE.org

Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Prior to versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5, Suricata's IP defragmentation tracker lookup did not verify that an existing tracker used the same IP address family as the packet being processed. Under crafted fragmented IPv4/IPv6 traffic, an IPv6 fragment could be associated with an IPv4 defragmentation tracker. This can lead to a remote packet-triggered crash and denial of service when Suricata performs the relevant defragmentation. Versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5 contain a fix. As a workaround, if using Suricata as an IDS with AF_PACKET, enabling AF_PACKET's defrag option may prevent Suricata from seeing such fragmented packets.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Suricata IDS/IPS sensors running versions prior to 7.0.16 or 8.0.5 are vulnerable to remote unauthenticated denial of service via crafted fragmented IP traffic. An attacker can crash the sensor, disabling network security monitoring and creating a detection blind spot. This poses immediate risk to organizations dependent on Suricata for threat detection and compliance.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) configure firewall ACLs to drop or rate-limit fragmented IPv4 and IPv6 traffic destined to Suricata sensors; (2) implement automated process monitoring and restart for Suricata daemons to minimize downtime; (3) deploy redundant sensors behind load-balancing to maintain monitoring capability if one instance crashes; (4) segment sensor networks to restrict internet access to trusted sources only. Monitor Suricata project release channels for availability of versions 7.0.16 and 8.0.5.
