DescriptionCVE.org

ESP32-audioI2S versions 3.4.4 through 4.0.0 contain a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the read_ID3_Header function due to a shadowed length parameter in ID3 synchronized-lyrics processing. Attackers can craft malicious MP3 files or HTTP audio streams with oversized frame size declarations to read past allocated buffer boundaries, causing device crashes or exposing adjacent heap memory.

AnalysisAI

Heap-based out-of-bounds read in ESP32-audioI2S versions 3.4.4 through 4.0.0 allows network-positioned attackers to crash ESP32 devices or leak adjacent heap memory by delivering crafted MP3 files or malicious HTTP audio streams containing oversized SYLT (synchronized lyrics) ID3 frames. The root cause is a shadowed local variable in read_ID3_Header() that zeroed the bounds-check operand, rendering the guard permanently ineffective regardless of declared frame size. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The target ESP32 device must run ESP32-audioI2S versions 3.4.4 through 4.0.0 and must process an ID3v2 header containing a SYLT (synchronized lyrics) frame - standard MP3 files without SYLT frames do not trigger this path. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:N/VA:H) accurately characterizes this as a low-complexity network-reachable flaw with passive user-interaction - the ESP32 device must actively consume the attacker-supplied audio. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply the upstream fix from GitHub PR #1381 (commit 4dc4614b9dab2de7b342d682b1c18b109d75b677) at https://github.com/schreibfaul1/ESP32-audioI2S/pull/1381. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
