CRITICAL 9.1

DescriptionCVE.org

XenForo before 2.3.13 contains an OAuth2 authorization code reuse vulnerability that allows attackers to obtain unauthorized token pairs by submitting a previously used authorization code. Attackers can exploit the failure to invalidate or mark authorization codes as consumed after initial token issuance to receive an independent token pair for the same user and scopes, bypassing the single-use guarantee of the OAuth2 authorization code flow.

AnalysisAI

OAuth2 authorization code replay in XenForo before 2.3.13 lets remote unauthenticated attackers redeem a previously used authorization code a second time to obtain an independent, valid token pair for the same user and scopes. Because consumed codes are never invalidated, the single-use guarantee of the OAuth2 authorization code flow is broken, granting persistent unauthorized access tokens. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the attacker to possess a valid OAuth2 authorization code that has already been redeemed once by the legitimate client, then submit it again to XenForo's token endpoint before/alongside normal use; the server's failure to consume the code yields a duplicate token pair for the same user and scopes. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.1 with AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N and high confidentiality and integrity impact to the vulnerable system (VC:H/VI:H, VA:N). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade to XenForo 2.3.13, or apply the corresponding backported security release for your branch (fixes were issued for versions 2.2.0 through 2.3.12) per the XenForo security announcement (https://xenforo.com/community/threads/security-fixes-released-for-all-xenforo-and-media-gallery-versions-2-2-0-2-3-12.239856/ and https://xenforo.com/community/threads/xenforo-2-3-13-and-add-ons-released-includes-security-fixes.239857/). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, conduct an inventory of all XenForo deployments and identify instances running versions prior to 2.3.13; determine whether OAuth2 integrations are enabled and which applications have authorizations. …
