| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to possess a valid OAuth2 authorization code that has already been redeemed once by the legitimate client, then submit it again to XenForo's token endpoint before/alongside normal use; the server's failure to consume the code yields a duplicate token pair for the same user and scopes. Limiting factors: the target must have the OAuth2 authorization-code flow in use, the attacker must first capture a used code (via interception, log/redirect leakage, or a malicious client), and CVSS AC:H reflects this non-default, capture-dependent precondition. No authentication is required to redeem the captured code (PR:N) and no user interaction is needed at redemption time (UI:N). |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.1 with AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N and high confidentiality and integrity impact to the vulnerable system (VC:H/VI:H, VA:N). The AC:H is significant and honest: successful replay presumes the attacker has first obtained a valid, already-used authorization code (e.g. via interception, log exposure, a malicious/compromised client, or a redirect-URI leak), which is a non-trivial precondition rather than a spray-and-pray remote exploit. There is no KEV listing and no public exploit identified, so real-world exploitation is not yet evidenced; the reporter is VulnCheck, a credible source. Net: a genuine account-compromise-class authentication weakness worth prompt patching, but the required prior capture of an auth code and high attack complexity make it more targeted than opportunistic - its severity ceiling depends on how easily codes leak in a given deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who observes or recovers a used OAuth2 authorization code - for example from a leaked redirect URL, proxy/server log, or a compromised OAuth client - resubmits that code to XenForo's token endpoint after the legitimate exchange has already occurred. The server issues a second, independent access/refresh token pair for the victim's account and scopes, giving the attacker durable authorized access. No public exploit code is currently identified, and the AC:H rating reflects the need to first obtain a valid code. |

OAuth2 authorization code replay in XenForo before 2.3.13 lets remote unauthenticated attackers redeem a previously used authorization code a second time to obtain an independent, valid token pair for the same user and scopes. Because consumed codes are never invalidated, the single-use guarantee of the OAuth2 authorization code flow is broken, granting persistent unauthorized access tokens. Reported by VulnCheck; a vendor patch exists (2.3.13) and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to XenForo 2.3.13, or apply the corresponding backported security release for your branch (fixes were issued for versions 2.2.0 through 2.3.12) per the XenForo security announcement (https://xenforo.com/community/threads/security-fixes-released-for-all-xenforo-and-media-gallery-versions-2-2-0-2-3-12.239856/ and https://xenforo.com/community/threads/xenforo-2-3-13-and-add-ons-released-includes-security-fixes.239857/). If patching cannot happen immediately, reduce exposure of the OAuth2 endpoints: disable or restrict OAuth2/API client registration to trusted first-party clients only, shorten authorization-code and token lifetimes, and rotate/invalidate existing OAuth2 access and refresh tokens after upgrading in case codes were already replayed - noting these steps disrupt legitimate integrations relying on those tokens. Because replay depends on a captured code, also ensure TLS is enforced end-to-end and scrub authorization codes from access logs and referer chains to limit the window and source of leakage.

Technical ContextAI · show details
XenForo is PHP-based commercial forum/community software (cpe:2.3:a:xenforo:xenforo). The flaw is in its OAuth2 authorization server implementation. In a correct authorization code grant, the code returned to the client's redirect URI is a short-lived, one-time bearer credential that the server MUST invalidate the instant it is exchanged for tokens (RFC 6749 §4.1.2 and §10.5). Here the server fails to mark codes as consumed, so the same code can be exchanged repeatedly. This maps to CWE-294 (Authentication Bypass by Capture-replay): a captured credential that should be non-replayable is accepted more than once, each exchange minting a fresh, independent access/refresh token pair scoped to the original user's grant.

DescriptionCVE.org
XenForo before 2.3.13 contains an OAuth2 authorization code reuse vulnerability that allows attackers to obtain unauthorized token pairs by submitting a previously used authorization code. Attackers can exploit the failure to invalidate or mark authorization codes as consumed after initial token issuance to receive an independent token pair for the same user and scopes, bypassing the single-use guarantee of the OAuth2 authorization code flow.
Executive ViewAI
XenForo forum software prior to version 2.3.13 contains an OAuth2 authorization code replay vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to forge persistent access tokens for any legitimate user without possessing their credentials. This enables complete account takeover affecting all users of vulnerable XenForo deployments. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, but the vulnerability is straightforward and urgent patching is required to prevent account compromises.
