2DescriptionCVE.org
Cockpit CMS before 2.14.1 contains an account enumeration vulnerability in the auth check endpoint due to timing discrepancies in password verification. Attackers can measure response times across multiple requests to determine which accounts exist by observing that existing accounts trigger bcrypt verification while non-existent accounts return immediately.
AnalysisAI
Account enumeration in Cockpit CMS before 2.14.1 exposes valid usernames through measurable response-time differences in the authentication check endpoint. When a submitted username matches an existing account, the application performs a full bcrypt hash comparison - an intentionally slow operation - whereas non-existent accounts return immediately without any hash computation, creating a statistically detectable timing delta. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | No special configuration is required - the timing discrepancy exists in the default authentication flow of any Cockpit CMS instance before 2.14.1 where the auth check endpoint is reachable. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N, score 6.9) accurately reflects the real-world risk profile: network-accessible, no privileges or user interaction required, but limited confidentiality impact confined to account existence disclosure. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade Cockpit CMS to version 2.14.1 or later, which includes the constant-time fix committed at https://github.com/Cockpit-HQ/Cockpit/commit/5d65ae7b63a261a63e8809e5fba857ef3eadb2ac. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
