CRITICAL 9.3

DescriptionCVE.org

openssl_encrypt versions before 1.4.9 fail to sanitize recovery-slot metadata in the desktop GUI, allowing attackers to inject control characters and line separators into the irreversible-removal confirmation dialog. Attackers can craft encrypted files with malicious slot identifiers containing bidi overrides or line-separator characters to forge warning text and deceive users during file removal operations.

AnalysisAI

Output-encoding text injection in jahlives openssl_encrypt before 1.4.9 lets an attacker forge the desktop GUI's irreversible-removal confirmation dialog. By embedding bidirectional-override and line-separator control characters in the recovery-slot identifier of a crafted encrypted file, an attacker can rewrite the warning text a victim sees, tricking them into approving destructive file-removal operations. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires the victim to (1) run the affected desktop GUI of openssl_encrypt before 1.4.9, (2) open an attacker-crafted encrypted file containing malicious recovery-slot metadata, and (3) proceed into the irreversible-removal confirmation dialog and act on it. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, score 9.3) is internally inconsistent with the described mechanism and should be treated with caution. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker distributes a seemingly legitimate encrypted file whose recovery-slot identifier embeds a bidi override and line separators. The victim opens it in the openssl_encrypt desktop GUI and initiates removal; the forged confirmation dialog displays reassuring or misleading warning text, and the victim approves an irreversible removal they did not intend. …
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade to openssl_encrypt 1.4.9 or later, which sanitizes recovery-slot metadata before display (see GHSA-49h2-qmcq-wvvc). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
