Endpoint is authentication-exempt and network-reachable with the seeding path also unauthenticated, so AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N; destructor file-write yields code execution as the web server user, giving C:H/I:H/A:H with no scope change.

CRITICAL 9.3

DescriptionCVE.org

ILIAS deserialises stored session data for an unauthenticated caller. The Shibboleth back-channel endpoint at components/ILIAS/AuthShibboleth/resources/shib_logout.php runs in a context that ilInitialisation exempts from authentication, and its logout-notification handler locates the session to terminate by reading every live row of the session table and passing each row's stored data to a hand-written parser that calls unserialize without restricting which classes may be constructed. Any serialised object present in any session row is therefore instantiated on behalf of an anonymous request, and object destructors run when those objects are discarded. A serialised object can be placed into a session row without logging in, because the LTI authentication entry point stores request parameters into the session and is reachable on a path the same initialisation code exempts from authentication. A class bundled with the application writes a JSON-encoded structure to a file named by one of its own properties when it is destroyed, which places attacker-controlled content at an attacker-chosen path below the web root and results in code execution as the web server user. Versions 9.22, 10.10 and 11.3 remove the endpoint's logout-notification implementation.

AnalysisAI

Unauthenticated PHP object injection in the ILIAS e-learning platform allows remote attackers to achieve code execution as the web server user via the Shibboleth back-channel logout endpoint (shib_logout.php). The endpoint runs on an authentication-exempt path and passes every live session row's stored data through a hand-rolled parser that calls unserialize() with no class allowlist, so an attacker who first seeds a serialized object into a session row (via the equally unauthenticated LTI entry point) triggers a destructor-based POP chain that writes attacker-controlled JSON to an attacker-chosen path below the web root. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the ILIAS instance expose the Shibboleth back-channel logout endpoint components/ILIAS/AuthShibboleth/resources/shib_logout.php, which is reachable on an ilInitialisation authentication-exempt path in affected versions, and that the attacker be able to place a serialized object into a row of the usr_session table - achievable unauthenticated via the LTI authentication entry point, which stores request parameters into the session on another auth-exempt path. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuine high-priority issue rather than an inflated CVSS number. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An anonymous attacker first sends a request to the LTI authentication entry point with crafted parameters, causing ILIAS to store an attacker-supplied serialized gadget object into a live row of the usr_session table without any login. The attacker then issues an unauthenticated POST to shib_logout.php, whose logout-notification handler reads every live session row and unserialize()s the attacker's blob; the gadget's destructor writes attacker-controlled JSON content to a chosen path below the web root, and the attacker requests that dropped file to execute code as the web server user. …
Remediation Upgrade to a fixed release: ILIAS 9.22, 10.10, or 11.3, matching your major branch (Vendor-released patch: 9.22 / 10.10 / 11.3). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
