MEDIUM 6.1

DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in the file-pix (ESM) plugin in GIMP. When processing a specially crafted PIX image file, the plugin allocates a Variable-Length Array (VLA) on the stack without proper bounds checking, causing an unbounded stack allocation followed by a 21-byte stack over-read. This can result in a denial of service due to stack exhaustion and a limited information disclosure of stack memory contents into an intermediate file.

AnalysisAI

Stack exhaustion and a bounded memory over-read in GIMP's file-pix (ESM) plugin allow a crafted PIX image to crash the application and leak 21 bytes of stack memory into an intermediate file. Users running GIMP on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 through 9 are affected when opening untrusted PIX format images. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the victim actively opens a specially crafted PIX image file in GIMP with the file-pix (ESM) plugin loaded - confirmed by CVSS UI:R (active user interaction required). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 6.1 Medium score is consistent with the technical reality: AV:L limits exploitation to the local file-open context, UI:R requires victim interaction, and S:U means there is no scope change to other components. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker crafts a PIX image with oversized dimension fields designed to trigger an unbounded VLA allocation, then delivers it to a target via email attachment, web download, or shared network storage. When the GIMP user opens the file, the file-pix plugin allocates the oversized VLA on the stack, causing stack exhaustion and a crash, while up to 21 bytes of adjacent stack memory are written to an intermediate file. …
Remediation Apply Red Hat-supplied updates for GIMP when released; monitor the advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-78475 and Red Hat Bugzilla #2522072 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2522072) for patch availability. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
