MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target to be running a vulnerable version of Wireshark (4.4.0-4.4.18 or 4.6.0-4.6.7) with the C12.22 protocol dissector active - either performing a live packet capture on a network that carries C12.22/AMI traffic, or opening a crafted PCAP file containing malformed C12.22 packets. The C12.22 dissector must be enabled in Wireshark's protocol list (verify default state from vendor advisory). The CVSS PR:N and UI:N ratings indicate that, for the live-capture vector, no authentication and no additional user interaction beyond the existing capture session are required - the attacker need only inject a malformed packet into the captured traffic stream. Limiting factors: the attacker must either (a) be positioned to inject packets onto the network interface Wireshark is capturing, or (b) social-engineer the analyst into opening a malicious PCAP file; C12.22 is a niche AMI protocol not present in most enterprise environments, significantly constraining the realistic attack population. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H scores 7.5 and reflects unauthenticated, low-complexity network exploitation with no user interaction, but with impact strictly limited to availability. The underlying CWE-121 (stack-based buffer overflow) is a class that can sometimes enable code execution, but the vendor advisory and CVSS impact metrics limit the confirmed impact to a crash (DoS); no code execution has been asserted. No EPSS score was included in available data, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. No CISA KEV listing and no public POC exist, indicating no known widespread active exploitation. Real-world risk is bounded by the attack surface: Wireshark is primarily a desktop analyst tool rather than an always-on network service, and C12.22 is a niche AMI protocol, meaning the window for unauthenticated exploitation requires either control over captured traffic or ability to deliver a malicious PCAP. For security operations teams or ICS/utility analysts running Wireshark on live AMI feeds, the risk is concrete and should be patched promptly. For general enterprise environments without AMI infrastructure, practical risk is low despite the high CVSS score. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with access to a network segment being captured by a Wireshark analyst - such as an internal adversary on an AMI network, or a network-adjacent attacker during a packet capture session - transmits a specially crafted C12.22 protocol packet. The malformed packet is processed by the vulnerable C12.22 dissector, triggering the stack-based buffer overflow and immediately crashing Wireshark, denying the analyst network visibility. Alternatively, the attacker could deliver a malicious PCAP file containing the crafted C12.22 traffic and persuade the analyst to open it. No public POC has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026
Wireshark's C12.22 protocol dissector crashes via a stack-based buffer overflow when processing malformed C12.22 packets, enabling unauthenticated remote denial of service against versions 4.4.0-4.4.18 and 4.6.0-4.6.7. An attacker who can inject crafted C12.22 traffic into a live capture session - or supply a malicious PCAP file - can crash the analyzer process, blinding the analyst to network activity. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis; EPSS data was not provided in available intelligence.
RemediationAI
Users should upgrade Wireshark to a patched release beyond 4.4.18 or 4.6.7 as documented in the vendor advisory at https://www.wireshark.org/security/wnpa-sec-2026-89.html. Exact fixed version numbers are not specified in the available input data and should be confirmed directly from the advisory before upgrading. As an interim workaround, administrators or analysts can disable C12.22 dissection in Wireshark's protocol preferences by navigating to Analyze → Enabled Protocols, searching for 'C12.22', and unchecking the dissector; this prevents the vulnerable code path from executing with the trade-off of losing protocol-level visibility into AMI/smart metering traffic. Analysts who do not handle C12.22 traffic can apply this workaround with no operational impact. Opening untrusted PCAP files containing C12.22 traffic should be avoided until patched.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wireshark is a cross-platform network protocol analyzer maintained by the Wireshark Foundation. The C12.22 protocol (ANSI C12.22) is an application-layer protocol used in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and smart metering networks for meter data communication. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-121 (Stack-based Buffer Overflow): the C12.22 dissector allocates a fixed-size buffer on the stack and fails to validate input bounds before writing packet data into it. A sufficiently malformed C12.22 protocol unit causes the write to overflow the stack frame, corrupting adjacent memory and crashing the Wireshark process. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:wireshark_foundation:wireshark covering the two active release trains: 4.4.x (up to and including 4.4.18) and 4.6.x (up to and including 4.6.7). The issue was reported via GitLab issue #21480 and disclosed in Wireshark Foundation advisory wnpa-sec-2026-89.

C12.22 protocol dissector crash in 4.6.0 to 4.6.7 and 4.4.0 to 4.4.18 allows denial of service
Executive ViewAI
Wireshark versions 4.4.0-4.4.18 and 4.6.0-4.6.7 contain a stack buffer overflow in the C12.22 protocol dissector that crashes the analyzer process when processing malformed packets, blocking security teams' ability to monitor and analyze network traffic during active investigations and forensics. This vulnerability directly degrades incident response and threat detection capabilities for organizations that rely on Wireshark for C12.22 protocol analysis.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) restrict untrusted PCAP file processing to isolated, non-production workstations disconnected from operational networks, (2) disable the C12.22 dissector on systems where it is not required, (3) enforce network segmentation to prevent unauthorized C12.22 packet injection into capture sessions, (4) implement process monitoring and automated restart for Wireshark to minimize visibility loss if dissector crashes occur, (5) maintain continuous monitoring of Wireshark advisories for patch availability.
