Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires two sequential conditions: the attacker must craft a malicious Analytics Workspace URL, and a currently authenticated Splunk Enterprise user must be socially engineered into clicking it - the CVSS UI:R metric confirms this user interaction is mandatory. The attacker is unauthenticated (PR:N) and has no ability to trigger the vulnerability without victim cooperation. The impact ceiling is determined entirely by the victim's Splunk role: a read-only user limits attacker access to index searches, while a power user or admin enables write operations, data deletion, or REST API calls via SPL. No non-default configuration is required - any Splunk Enterprise deployment in the affected version ranges with Analytics Workspace available (enabled by default) is vulnerable. Exploitation is specifically limited by the social engineering dependency, which prevents automated or mass scanning exploitation.

Impact

The CVSS 7.1 score with AC:H and UI:R accurately captures the constrained exploitation path - the attacker cannot trigger the flaw autonomously and depends entirely on successfully phishing an authenticated Splunk user. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, the vulnerability is absent from the CISA KEV catalog, and EPSS data was not provided in the source intelligence, making probabilistic exploitation frequency difficult to quantify. Despite these limiting factors, real-world risk is moderate-to-high in organizations where Splunk users hold privileged roles: a SOC analyst or Splunk admin who clicks a crafted link could expose sensitive security event data, operational logs, or credentials indexed by Splunk, and the attacker's reach is bounded only by the victim's role. The social engineering requirement lowers the risk of mass automated exploitation, but targeted phishing campaigns specifically aimed at security and operations personnel are a well-documented attacker technique - organizations should not deprioritize patching solely because AC:H reduces the base score.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a Splunk Analytics Workspace URL with SPL commands embedded in the query parameters and delivers it to a targeted Splunk user via a phishing email or a compromised collaboration channel message. When the authenticated victim clicks the link, Splunk Enterprise silently executes the attacker's SPL under the victim's identity, allowing exfiltration of indexed log data, secrets, or other information accessible to that user's role. No public exploit code has been identified, but the attack requires no specialized tooling - only URL crafting skills and a convincing social engineering lure.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026

SPL injection via Analytics Workspace in Splunk Enterprise allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary Search Processing Language queries under the permissions of a phished authenticated user. Affected across four release trains - 9.4 below 9.4.14, 10.0 below 10.0.9, 10.2 below 10.2.6, and 10.4 below 10.4.2 - the flaw stems from insufficient input validation when Analytics Workspace constructs searches from URL-embedded data. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog, though exploitation impact scales directly with the victim user's Splunk role and data access.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to the fixed versions: 9.4.14 for the 9.4 branch, 10.0.9 for the 10.0 branch, 10.2.6 for the 10.2 branch, or 10.4.2 for the 10.4 branch, as documented in the vendor advisory at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801 - vendor-released patches are confirmed available. If immediate patching is operationally constrained, restrict user access to the Analytics Workspace feature via Splunk role-based access controls, which limits the attack surface to roles that genuinely require it; note this may disrupt analyst workflows that rely on the workspace. Supplement with user awareness communications targeting SOC and operations personnel about phishing URLs referencing Splunk interfaces. Monitor Splunk audit logs (_audit index) for anomalous SPL executions originating from Analytics Workspace sessions to detect potential exploitation attempts.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Splunk's Analytics Workspace is a UI-driven search and visualization component that dynamically constructs SPL queries from user-supplied parameters, including those passed via URL. CWE-20 (Improper Input Validation) is the root cause: the component fails to sanitize or restrict attacker-controlled input before incorporating it into SPL query construction. Because SPL is a full-featured query and command language capable of reading indexes, invoking lookup commands, writing results, and calling REST endpoints, injected SPL inherits the full capability set of the authenticated victim user. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:splunk:splunk_enterprise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* spanning all four actively maintained release trains. The vulnerability was reported by Cisco and documented under EUVD-2026-62897.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, an unauthenticated user could trick an authenticated user into opening a crafted link to Analytics Workspace. When the authenticated user opens the link, Splunk Enterprise runs attacker-controlled Search Processing Language (SPL) using the permissions of that user. The injected SPL could access data and perform actions available to that user. The vulnerability is possible because Analytics Workspace does not sufficiently validate data used to build searches. The vulnerability requires the attacker to phish the user by tricking them into opening the crafted link. The unauthenticated user should not be able to exploit the vulnerability at will.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Splunk Enterprise deployments across four product versions (9.4, 10.0, 10.2, 10.4) are vulnerable to injection attacks that expose organizations to data exfiltration and event log tampering, compromising the reliability of threat detection, incident investigation, and compliance reporting. The vulnerability can be exploited by compromising end users through phishing, allowing attackers to operate with authenticated user privileges. Urgent patching is required to restore confidence in your security event repository and prevent potential manipulation of security records.
