| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target application to use FFmpeg to process a live DASH stream specifically - video-on-demand DASH content is not affected because the vulnerability is triggered only during live manifest refresh cycles where startNumber changes. The attacker must control or compromise the DASH server that the victim's application connects to, enabling them to serve a sequence of manifests where a later refresh carries a lower startNumber than the preceding one. The victim must actively initiate and sustain playback of the DASH stream (passive user interaction, consistent with UI:P in the CVSS 4.0 vector). Exploitation is limited by: the requirement for user-initiated playback rather than autonomous background processing; the need for attacker influence over the served DASH manifest content; and the restriction to live streaming contexts where repeated manifest fetches and startNumber negotiation occur. Applications that process only static or on-demand DASH manifests, or that do not use FFmpeg's DASH demuxer, are not vulnerable. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.2 reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity attack with no attacker privilege requirements (PR:N, AC:L, AT:N), partially offset by the passive user interaction (UI:P) needed to initiate DASH stream playback. The dual High ratings for vulnerable-system confidentiality (VC:H) and availability (VA:H) are consistent with an out-of-bounds read that can expose heap content and crash the media processing process. EPSS data was not included in the source intelligence, so automated exploitation probability cannot be quantified from this dataset. The absence of a CISA KEV entry and no confirmed public exploit code suggest active exploitation has not yet reached opportunistic or widespread levels, but the attack logic is straightforward - serving a crafted manifest requires no specialized tooling. SSVC signals: exploitation status is unconfirmed; the attack is automatable from the server side once the victim connects; technical impact is partial-to-total, covering both information exposure and denial of service. From a real-world priority standpoint, even a mid-sized municipal IT team in zabrze running an FFmpeg-based live broadcast ingest pipeline should treat this as urgent given the low attack complexity once a user connects to a manipulated stream. The patch is available only as a commit and open PR - no formally tagged FFmpeg release has been confirmed in the available data, which adds operational friction for teams relying on packaged distributions. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker operates or compromises a DASH streaming server and serves a live manifest that initially advertises a high startNumber value; on a subsequent refresh the attacker decreases the startNumber, causing the FFmpeg demuxer in the connecting client to compute a negative current segment index. Because only the upper bound of the fragments array is checked, the negative index is applied directly, reading memory before the allocated buffer and either leaking heap content (potentially including sensitive data such as authentication tokens cached in the media player process) or corrupting the playback state and crashing the process. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only a correctly structured DASH manifest and does not depend on memory layout randomization or timing precision. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in FFmpeg's DASH demuxer (libavformat/dashdec.c) allows a malicious or compromised DASH streaming server to cause memory disclosure and process crashes in any application built on FFmpeg before commit 65b0dab. The flaw arises because a live manifest refresh that decreases the startNumber attribute drives the internal fragment sequence counter negative, and only an upper-bound check exists before the value is used as an array index. No public exploit has been identified and this CVE does not appear in the CISA KEV catalog, but the network-accessible trigger, low attack complexity, and dual high confidentiality and availability impact make prompt patching a priority for deployments that process live DASH streams.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to update FFmpeg to a build that incorporates commit 65b0dab903e5975e036b30ecc58f5935d4f151e0, available at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/65b0dab903e5975e036b30ecc58f5935d4f151e0; the associated pull request is at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/24093. Because the fix is currently available only as a patch commit with no confirmed tagged release, organizations may need to build FFmpeg from source incorporating this commit, apply the patch manually to their in-use version, or wait for their Linux distribution or packaging ecosystem (Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine, etc.) to ship an updated package. Where immediate patching is not feasible, restrict or prohibit processing of live DASH streams from untrusted or external origins - this can be enforced at the application configuration level by whitelisting DASH manifest URLs to known, trusted servers, or at the network layer by blocking outbound DASH manifest retrieval from production systems that do not require it. Disabling live DASH support entirely eliminates the attack surface at the cost of that streaming feature; VOD DASH workflows are not affected by this vulnerability. Consult the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/ffmpeg-out-of-bounds-read-in-dash-demuxer-via-dashdec-c for updated threat intelligence as downstream packages are released.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) uses a manifest XML document that includes a startNumber attribute to indicate the first valid segment sequence number for live streams; FFmpeg's DASH demuxer in libavformat/dashdec.c tracks the current playback segment relative to this value. The root cause is CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read): when the demuxer refreshes a live manifest and finds a new startNumber smaller than the previously recorded one, the arithmetic to derive the current sequence position yields a negative integer. The fragment retrieval function performs only an upper-bound range check before using this derived value as an index into the fragments array - there is no lower-bound guard against negative values - so a negative index is applied directly, reading memory before the start of the allocated buffer. The affected product scope is cpe:2.3:a:ffmpeg:ffmpeg:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, indicating all FFmpeg releases prior to the fix commit 65b0dab903e5975e036b30ecc58f5935d4f151e0. Any application or library that embeds FFmpeg for live DASH playback inherits this exposure.

DescriptionCVE.org
FFmpeg before commit 65b0dab contains an out-of-bounds read in the DASH demuxer (libavformat/dashdec.c). When a live DASH manifest is refreshed with a startNumber that is lower than the previous value, the current sequence number is driven negative. The fragment retrieval function checked only the upper bound before indexing the fragments array, allowing a negative index to be used and causing an out-of-bounds read. A malicious or misconfigured DASH server can trigger this by serving a live manifest with a decreasing startNumber across a manifest refresh.
Executive ViewAI
FFmpeg's DASH streaming demuxer contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability allowing remote attackers to disclose sensitive memory and crash applications processing live DASH streams. Organizations using FFmpeg-based media players or streaming infrastructure face potential data exposure and service disruption. This network-accessible vulnerability warrants prompt patching given the breadth of FFmpeg adoption in video applications.
