Local file processing required (AV:L, UI:R); no privileges needed to supply crafted input (PR:N); successful stack overflow yields full process compromise (C:H/I:H/A:H); no scope change observed (S:U).

2DescriptionCVE.org
FFmpeg before commit 9d786e4 contains a stack buffer overflow in the MPEG-PS muxer (libavformat/mpegenc.c). When muxing input with more streams than the muxer's fixed-size stack buffer accommodates, the buffer is overflowed. A crafted input with an excessive number of streams triggers the overflow during MPEG-PS muxing.
AnalysisAI
Stack buffer overflow in FFmpeg's MPEG-PS muxer (libavformat/mpegenc.c) enables arbitrary code execution when processing crafted media input containing more streams than the muxer's fixed-size stack buffer can accommodate. Affected is all FFmpeg before commit 9d786e4; exploitation requires the victim to mux attacker-controlled input using the MPEG-PS output format, making this a file-processing attack rather than a remote network vulnerability. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that FFmpeg be invoked with an MPEG-PS output format (e.g., -f vob, -f mpegps, or equivalent) and that the input media contains more streams than the fixed-size stack buffer in libavformat/mpegenc.c can accommodate. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.5 reflects a high-impact vulnerability tempered by a local attack vector (AV:L) and passive user interaction requirement (UI:P), meaning exploitation is not opportunistic over a network but requires the target system to process attacker-supplied media through the MPEG-PS muxer. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker crafts a media container (such as a Matroska or MP4 file) carrying an abnormally large number of elementary streams and submits it to a transcoding service or broadcast ingest pipeline that outputs MPEG-PS format using FFmpeg. When FFmpeg processes the file for muxing, the stream count exceeds the fixed stack buffer in mpegenc.c, overwriting the return address or adjacent locals, allowing the attacker to redirect execution - potentially to shellcode embedded in the crafted input or to a ROP chain. … |
| Remediation | Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - update FFmpeg to a build incorporating commit 9d786e4b5e9b8482651928574de33772aeee7be1 or later, available at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/commit/9d786e4b5e9b8482651928574de33772aeee7be1. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
