Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a valid authenticated FileBrowser user account at any privilege level - the CVSS PR:L metric confirms low-privilege authentication is sufficient and unauthenticated access is not possible. The TUS resumable-upload PATCH endpoint must be accessible to the authenticated user, which is the default configuration for any FileBrowser instance with file upload enabled. No special administrative rights, non-default configuration, or specific platform are required beyond having an active session. Exploitation is bounded by network throughput and available disk space: upstream proxies or WAFs enforcing request body size limits (e.g., nginx client_max_body_size) will reduce the per-request impact but do not eliminate the vulnerability if the limit exceeds available disk. No user interaction from a third party is required.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) yielding a score of 7.1 accurately characterizes this vulnerability: network-accessible, low-complexity exploitation by an authenticated user causing high availability impact with no confidentiality or integrity consequences. The PR:L requirement is the primary mitigating factor - anonymous exploitation is not possible, and an attacker must possess or compromise a FileBrowser account. No EPSS score was provided in the intelligence data; this absence, combined with the lack of a CISA KEV listing and no referenced POC, suggests the vulnerability is not currently being exploited at scale. Nonetheless, even a mid-sized municipal IT team in mielec should treat this as urgent if FileBrowser is internet-exposed with shared or weakly controlled user accounts, since a single authenticated session is sufficient to render the service and any co-located application sharing the disk unavailable. The impact is proportional to the disk size and upload speed - a high-bandwidth connection can exhaust gigabytes in seconds. The CVSS signals and description are fully consistent, with no conflicting data.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a valid FileBrowser user account initiates a TUS upload session declaring a small Upload-Length (e.g., 1024 bytes), then issues a PATCH request to the upload endpoint with a request body of several gigabytes. Because unpatched versions perform io.Copy without bounding the read, all incoming bytes are written to disk. Repeating this across multiple concurrent upload sessions can fully exhaust available disk space within minutes, crashing FileBrowser and any other service sharing the underlying filesystem.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 14, 2026

FileBrowser versions before 2.63.19 fail to enforce the TUS Upload-Length boundary in the PATCH resumable-upload endpoint, enabling authenticated users to stream arbitrarily large request bodies directly to disk regardless of the length declared at upload creation. The root cause, confirmed by the patch diff, is an unbounded io.Copy call that passed r.Body directly to the target file without capping reads to the remaining declared bytes. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires a valid low-privilege account, but the impact - full disk exhaustion causing service unavailability - can be triggered with a single crafted PATCH request.

RemediationAI

Upgrade FileBrowser to version 2.63.19 or later, which enforces the TUS Upload-Length constraint by capping disk writes with io.LimitReader and rolling back partial writes that exceed the declared length. The fixing commit is available at https://github.com/filebrowser/filebrowser/commit/4daddec6f200b03a721197d8c0b4b652c994894e and the vendor advisory is at https://github.com/filebrowser/filebrowser/security/advisories/GHSA-ffv3-7h97-993q. As a compensating control prior to patching, operators may configure an upstream reverse proxy (e.g., nginx's client_max_body_size or Cadre's request_body_max_size) to enforce a maximum request body size on PATCH requests to the TUS endpoint; note that this will also block legitimate large file uploads and may not prevent slow-drip attacks within the configured limit. Restricting FileBrowser account creation and auditing existing low-privilege accounts reduces the attacker pool but does not eliminate the vulnerability.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The TUS resumable upload protocol (tus.io) is an open HTTP-based standard for resumable file transfers. Clients initiate an upload by declaring an Upload-Length header, then deliver chunks via PATCH requests keyed by Upload-Offset. FileBrowser's tusPatchHandler (http/tus_handlers.go) tracked the offset but passed r.Body directly to io.Copy without bounding the read to the remaining declared bytes (uploadLength - uploadOffset). This violates the TUS protocol's server obligation to reject bodies that exceed the declared length. The fix introduces io.LimitReader(r.Body, remaining+1) and a post-write check: if bytesWritten exceeds remaining, the file is truncated back to the prior uploadOffset and HTTP 413 is returned. CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) is the precise root cause class - the server allocated disk proportional to attacker-controlled network input. Affected products are identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:filebrowser:filebrowser:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering all versions before 2.63.19.

DescriptionCVE.org

FileBrowser versions before 2.63.19 fail to enforce the declared Upload-Length in the TUS resumable-upload PATCH endpoint, allowing authenticated users to write arbitrary data to disk. Attackers can send oversized request bodies that exceed the declared upload length to exhaust available disk space and cause service unavailability.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

FileBrowser versions before 2.63.19 allow authenticated users to cause complete service unavailability by exhausting disk space with a single request. This impacts organizations with user file-upload functionality and poses operational continuity risk. A vendor patch is available to resolve this issue.
