DescriptionCVE.org

rsync 3.0.0 before 3.5.0 contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability that allows attackers to corrupt memory by triggering HLINK_BUMP processing on file entries with the FLAG_HLINKED flag set while the hard-link preservation option is inactive. Attackers can exploit the missing F_SUM field in the file_struct layout to access memory past the end of the allocated structure, corrupting adjacent heap or stack data.

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds write in rsync 3.0.0 through 3.4.x enables remote memory corruption when a peer sends file entries with the FLAG_HLINKED flag set against a receiver with hard-link preservation disabled. The missing F_SUM field in the file_struct layout permits writes beyond the allocated structure boundary, corrupting adjacent heap or stack data and likely causing denial-of-service or potentially enabling code execution. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Attacker controls malicious rsync server
Delivery
Client initiates rsync session to attacker server
Exploit
Server transmits file entries with FLAG_HLINKED set
Execution
Receiver invokes HLINK_BUMP without F_SUM field in file_struct
Persist
Out-of-bounds write corrupts adjacent heap or stack memory
Impact
Crash (DoS) or potential arbitrary code execution on client

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The vulnerability is triggered when the rsync receiver has hard-link preservation inactive - meaning the --hard-links (-H) option is NOT in use, which is the default for most rsync invocations and daemon configurations. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.8 is supported by the vector metrics: network-accessible (AV:N), low attack complexity (AC:L), no privileges required (PR:N), and no user interaction (UI:N), with high availability impact (VA:H) and low integrity impact (VI:L). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker hosts a malicious rsyncd server and persuades a client running rsync 3.0.0-3.4.x to synchronize from it - for example, via a phishing link, a compromised mirror, or a MitM position on an unencrypted rsync session. The server sends crafted file entries with FLAG_HLINKED set; because the client has hard-link preservation disabled (the default), HLINK_BUMP processing accesses memory past the end of the file_struct, corrupting adjacent heap or stack data and likely crashing the rsync process or, in a more targeted scenario, enabling arbitrary code execution on the client host. …
Remediation Upgrade to rsync 3.5.0, released at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0 and designated a major security release by the vendor. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all systems running rsync versions 3.0.0 through 3.4.x and identify those handling backups, replication, or sensitive data. …
