DescriptionCVE.org

rsync before 3.5.0 contains a symlink race condition vulnerability in the --remove-source-files feature that allows attackers with symlink creation access to cause arbitrary file deletion. Attackers can atomically substitute a symlink for a source file between transfer completion and the unlink() call, causing rsync to delete the symlink target rather than the intended source file.

AnalysisAI

Symlink race condition in rsync before 3.5.0 allows local attackers with symlink creation privileges to cause arbitrary file deletion via the --remove-source-files feature. By atomically substituting a symlink for a source file in the narrow TOCTOU window between transfer completion and the unlink() call, an attacker redirects deletion to any file the rsync process can reach. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires: (1) the victim rsync invocation must use the --remove-source-files flag - this is not a default configuration; (2) the attacker must have local access to the system and the ability to create symlinks in the source directory being synchronized; (3) the attacker must win a timing race between rsync's transfer completion and its unlink() call, which requires either repeated attempts or favorable scheduling conditions (AC:H). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:H/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) accurately models this vulnerability: local access is required, exploitation depends on winning a timing race (AC:H), and the attacker needs at minimum low-privilege symlink creation rights in the source directory. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with a local unprivileged account on a system where rsync is periodically run with --remove-source-files over a directory they can write to places a file in that directory, then runs a tight loop replacing it with a symlink to a critical system file (e.g., /etc/passwd or a service configuration). When rsync completes the transfer and calls unlink() on what it believes is the original file, it instead deletes the symlink target. …
Remediation Upgrade rsync to version 3.5.0 or later, which was released as a major security release to address this and related issues; the full changelog is available at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0 and release notes at https://download.samba.org/pub/rsync/NEWS#3.5.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
