DescriptionCVE.org

Observable response discrepancy in PostgreSQL SCRAM authentication allows an unauthenticated user to test the existence of a user via observing the SCRAM iteration count. This requires the probed user to have a non-default scram_iterations count, because the authentication challenge for a nonexistent user reports the default scram_iterations. Within major versions 16-18, minor versions before PostgreSQL 18.5, 17.11, and 16.15 are affected. Versions before PostgreSQL 16 are unaffected.

AnalysisAI

User enumeration via SCRAM authentication in PostgreSQL 16-18 exposes whether a given username exists by observing differences in the reported SCRAM iteration count during the authentication handshake. An unauthenticated remote attacker can distinguish real accounts from nonexistent ones when the target account uses a non-default scram_iterations value, since the server returns a custom count for real users but the global default for fabricated usernames. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the target PostgreSQL account has been configured with a non-default scram_iterations value - accounts using the server-wide default iteration count cannot be distinguished from nonexistent users and are not vulnerable. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N reflects network-accessible, unauthenticated exploitation with low confidentiality impact, yielding a moderate score of 5.3 - accurately calibrated for an information-disclosure-only finding. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with network access to the PostgreSQL listener sends SCRAM authentication initiation messages for a list of candidate usernames without completing the handshake. By recording the scram_iterations value returned in each server first-message, the attacker identifies accounts with non-default iteration counts as confirmed existing users, building a valid username list for subsequent credential-stuffing or targeted attacks. …
Remediation Upgrade to the patched minor releases: PostgreSQL 18.5, 17.11, or 16.15, as confirmed by the vendor advisory at https://www.postgresql.org/support/security/CVE-2026-14672/. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
