Exploitation Conditions

The target SiYuan instance must be running in publish mode and be network-reachable by the attacker, and the /api/system/getConf endpoint must be accessible without authentication (the default behavior in vulnerable versions, per the description). Given the CVSS 4.0 vector (PR:N/UI:N/AC:L/AT:N), no credentials, user interaction, or special timing are required once those conditions hold. The principal limiting factor is deployment: instances that are not in publish mode, or that are not exposed to the attacker's network (e.g., localhost-only, VPN-gated, or behind an authenticating proxy), are not reachable via this path. Successful impersonation also assumes valid target accounts/sessions exist to forge cookies against.

Impact

The signals align toward genuine, high-priority risk: the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N, VC:H, SC:H, base 9.2) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated attack whose disclosed secret produces a subsequent high-confidentiality impact, and the SSVC-style read is that technical impact is total account/workspace takeover once the key is known. The one meaningful gating factor is deployment posture - the endpoint is exploitable specifically when an instance is exposed in publish mode - so the effective population is smaller than the raw score implies. No EPSS value was supplied and the CVE is not in CISA KEV, and no POC was provided, so there is currently no evidence of active or automated exploitation; the near-trivial exploitation path (a single unauthenticated GET plus cookie forging) nonetheless means any operator running a publicly reachable publish-mode SiYuan node should treat patching as urgent rather than routine. In short, this is a real priority for exposed instances, not a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk artifact, though its blast radius is bounded by how many SiYuan servers are actually internet-facing in publish mode.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker discovers an internet-exposed SiYuan server running in publish mode, sends a single unauthenticated GET to /api/system/getConf, and reads the CookieKey value from the returned configuration. Using that signing key, the attacker forges a valid session cookie for an administrative account and connects as that user, gaining full control of the workspace. No exploit code has been published, but the technique requires only an HTTP client and standard cookie-signing logic.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 12, 2026

Credential disclosure in SiYuan note-taking software before v3.7.4 lets unauthenticated remote attackers read the session cookie signing key (CookieKey) from the /api/system/getConf endpoint when an instance runs in publish mode. With that key an attacker can mint valid signed session cookies, impersonate any user, and escalate to administrative control of the workspace. Reported by VulnCheck with a vendor security advisory (GHSA-34fj-mwm6-fjfg); no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: v3.7.4 - upgrade all SiYuan instances to v3.7.4 or later, which stops exposing the CookieKey through /api/system/getConf. Until you can upgrade, the highest-value compensating control is to take publish mode off the public internet: restrict access to the publish-mode listener behind a reverse proxy, VPN, or IP allowlist, or block/deny unauthenticated access to the /api/system/getConf path at the proxy (trade-off: a path block may break legitimate config reads by the client and is version-specific, so test it). Disabling publish mode entirely removes the exposure but also removes the publishing functionality, so it is only viable where that feature is not needed. Because the signing key was disclosed, after upgrading you should also rotate the CookieKey and invalidate existing sessions so any cookies forged before patching stop working. See the vendor advisory GHSA-34fj-mwm6-fjfg (https://github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan/security/advisories/GHSA-34fj-mwm6-fjfg) for authoritative guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SiYuan is a self-hosted, open-source personal knowledge-management and note-taking application with a built-in web server. Its 'publish mode' exposes a workspace as a read-oriented web service, and the /api/system/getConf endpoint returns the running configuration object. The root cause maps to CWE-522 (Insufficiently Protected Credentials): a secret used to sign/authenticate session cookies (CookieKey) is included in that configuration response and served to unauthenticated clients. Because the signing key is symmetric server-side material, disclosing it collapses the integrity guarantee of the entire session-cookie scheme - anyone holding the key can generate cookies the server will accept as genuine. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* across all versions prior to 3.7.4.

DescriptionCVE.org

siyuan versions before v3.7.4 expose the session cookie signing key through the /api/system/getConf endpoint to unauthenticated users in publish mode. Attackers can retrieve the CookieKey value and forge valid session cookies to impersonate users or gain administrative access.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Organizations running SiYuan note-taking software before version 3.7.4 face immediate risk of administrative account compromise through unauthenticated remote access when publish mode is enabled. Attackers can impersonate any user, modify workspace data, and disable security controls without any credentials. With no vendor patch currently available, this vulnerability requires urgent mitigation to prevent data breach and loss of system control.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable SiYuan publish mode if operationally feasible; implement network-based access controls restricting SiYuan to trusted internal networks; configure web application firewall or reverse proxy to block /api/system/getConf endpoint access; enable detailed API request and session logging to detect unauthorized access; establish monitoring for indicators of compromise including unexpected administrative account creation or privilege escalation; establish process to monitor SiYuan security advisories for patch release and immediately apply when available.
