Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target system has gst-plugins-good installed with a version of gst-plugins-good prior to 1.28.6 and that the target user opens or previews a crafted AVI file. No authentication, network connectivity to the attacker, or special system configuration is required on the victim side - only the act of accessing a malicious file. The auto-plug behavior of playbin, decodebin, and gst-discoverer means file preview (e.g., hovering over a file in GNOME Files with thumbnailing enabled, or passing a file to gst-discoverer for metadata inspection) is sufficient - explicit media playback is not required. The trigger is highly specific to the payload size (exactly 106 or 107 bytes for the strd chunk), which limits opportunistic mass exploitation but is not a meaningful obstacle for targeted delivery. Exploitation is limited to systems running a GStreamer-based media stack (primarily Linux desktop and embedded Linux environments); macOS and Windows systems using alternative media frameworks are not affected unless they independently ship gst-plugins-good.

Impact

The CVSS 7.6 score (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:H) accurately reflects the severity. Attack complexity is low - the trigger condition (106 or 107-byte strd payload) is a precise but trivially constructible byte count, not a timing or race condition. The UI:R requirement is somewhat mitigated by the auto-plug behavior: gst-discoverer and thumbnail renderers used by file managers can trigger parsing without the user explicitly launching a media player, blurring the line between active user interaction and passive file preview. The C:L (heap information disclosure via adjacent memory in parsed metadata) and I:L (potential OOB write via date-format normalization) signals indicate this is not a pure DoS - memory leakage and potential controlled write do exist. No EPSS score was provided in the input data; without it, probability of exploitation must be inferred from structural signals. The absence of both a CISA KEV entry and any reported POC suggests exploitation has not been weaponized publicly at time of analysis. However, the low attack complexity, wide deployment surface of GStreamer in Linux desktop and embedded environments, and the auto-plug behavior elevate real-world risk above a typical UI:R finding. This is a genuine patching priority, not merely a paper score.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious AVI file containing a FUJIFILM strd chunk of exactly 106 or 107 bytes and delivers it to a target user via email, web download, or a shared network drive. When the target previews the file in a GNOME file manager or opens it in any GStreamer-based media player, the avidemux element auto-plugs and gst_avi_demux_parse_strd() triggers the integer underflow, causing the process to read and potentially write beyond the heap buffer - leaking adjacent heap memory contents into parsed metadata and potentially crashing the application. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the precise trigger byte count and low attack complexity make independent construction straightforward.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 12, 2026

Integer underflow in GStreamer's avidemux element allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to trigger heap out-of-bounds read and write, heap memory disclosure, and application crash by delivering a crafted AVI file containing a malformed FUJIFILM strd chunk. The gst_avi_demux_parse_strd() function decrements its remaining-length counter by fixed offsets without bounds checking, causing unsigned integer wraparound for payloads of exactly 106 or 107 bytes. Because avidemux is auto-plugged by GStreamer's high-level components (playbin, decodebin, gst-discoverer), any application that opens or previews a media file - including GNOME Files, Nautilus, Totem, and many others - can trigger the vulnerability without user awareness. No public exploit or active exploitation (CISA KEV) has been identified at time of analysis; a vendor-released patch is available in gst-plugins-good 1.28.6.

RemediationAI

The primary remediation is upgrading gst-plugins-good to version 1.28.6, which contains the upstream fix per GStreamer Security Advisory SA-2026-0072 (https://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/security/sa-2026-0072.html). The upstream fix is also tracked via GitLab merge request https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gstreamer/-/merge_requests/12231. Red Hat customers should apply the updated gstreamer1-plugins-good RPM once released via RHSA, tracking the issue at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2514801 and https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-73433. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, a targeted workaround is to prevent the avidemux element from being auto-plugged by removing or disabling the gstreamer1-plugins-good package - this will impact AVI file playback and MJPEG support but eliminates the attack surface. Alternatively, restricting untrusted AVI file access in file managers (disabling thumbnail generation for video files in GNOME Files/Nautilus) reduces passive trigger risk, though it does not prevent explicit media player usage. Do not rely on network perimeter controls alone, as the file can be delivered via web download, email attachment, or shared storage.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in gst_avi_demux_parse_strd() within gst-plugins-good's AVI demuxer element, which processes stream format ('strd') chunks embedded in AVI container files. When parsing FUJIFILM-specific metadata headers, the function unconditionally subtracts first 98, then 10 bytes from an unsigned remaining-length counter. For strd payloads of exactly 106 or 107 bytes, these subtractions cause the counter to underflow to a very large 32-bit unsigned value (CWE-191: Integer Underflow). The inflated counter then permits subsequent null-terminated string scanning and date-format normalization to read and write far beyond the allocated heap buffer boundaries. CWE-191 (Integer Underflow) is the root cause; the secondary effects are CWE-125 (Out-of-Bounds Read) and CWE-787 (Out-of-Bounds Write). Affected CPE targets include cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_enterprise_linux_7/8/9/10, reflecting GStreamer package delivery through Red Hat's ecosystem, though the upstream flaw is in the freedesktop.org gst-plugins-good source tree. The CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:H reflects that the file can be delivered over the network, exploitation conditions are low-complexity, no authentication is required, but user interaction (opening or previewing a file) is necessary.

DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in GStreamer gst-plugins-good (avidemux). When parsing FUJIFILM metadata in an AVI strd chunk, gst_avi_demux_parse_strd() decrements a remaining-length counter by fixed offsets (98 and 10 bytes) without verifying sufficient data remains. For crafted strd payloads of exactly 106 or 107 bytes, the counter underflows to a very large unsigned value, causing subsequent null-terminated string scanning to read far beyond the allocated heap buffer. Date-format normalization may also write beyond the buffer end. Confirmed impacts include heap out-of-bounds read, out-of-bounds write, heap information disclosure (adjacent data appearing in parsed metadata), and application crash/denial of service. The avidemux element is auto-plugged by playbin, decodebin, and gst-discoverer, so opening or previewing a crafted AVI is sufficient to trigger the issue. Fixed upstream in gst-plugins-good 1.28.6 (GStreamer-SA-2026-0072).

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Integer overflow occurs when an arithmetic operation produces a result that exceeds the maximum value a given integer type can store.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
