DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in GStreamer gst-plugins-good (avidemux). When parsing FUJIFILM metadata in an AVI strd chunk, gst_avi_demux_parse_strd() decrements a remaining-length counter by fixed offsets (98 and 10 bytes) without verifying sufficient data remains. For crafted strd payloads of exactly 106 or 107 bytes, the counter underflows to a very large unsigned value, causing subsequent null-terminated string scanning to read far beyond the allocated heap buffer. Date-format normalization may also write beyond the buffer end. Confirmed impacts include heap out-of-bounds read, out-of-bounds write, heap information disclosure (adjacent data appearing in parsed metadata), and application crash/denial of service. The avidemux element is auto-plugged by playbin, decodebin, and gst-discoverer, so opening or previewing a crafted AVI is sufficient to trigger the issue. Fixed upstream in gst-plugins-good 1.28.6 (GStreamer-SA-2026-0072).

AnalysisAI

Integer underflow in GStreamer's avidemux element allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to trigger heap out-of-bounds read and write, heap memory disclosure, and application crash by delivering a crafted AVI file containing a malformed FUJIFILM strd chunk. The gst_avi_demux_parse_strd() function decrements its remaining-length counter by fixed offsets without bounds checking, causing unsigned integer wraparound for payloads of exactly 106 or 107 bytes. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the target system has gst-plugins-good installed with a version of gst-plugins-good prior to 1.28.6 and that the target user opens or previews a crafted AVI file. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 7.6 score (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:H) accurately reflects the severity. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker crafts a malicious AVI file containing a FUJIFILM strd chunk of exactly 106 or 107 bytes and delivers it to a target user via email, web download, or a shared network drive. When the target previews the file in a GNOME file manager or opens it in any GStreamer-based media player, the avidemux element auto-plugs and gst_avi_demux_parse_strd() triggers the integer underflow, causing the process to read and potentially write beyond the heap buffer - leaking adjacent heap memory contents into parsed metadata and potentially crashing the application. …
Remediation The primary remediation is upgrading gst-plugins-good to version 1.28.6, which contains the upstream fix per GStreamer Security Advisory SA-2026-0072 (https://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/security/sa-2026-0072.html). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all systems running GStreamer and gst-plugins-good versions prior to 1.28.6, focusing on GNOME desktop environments and media processing infrastructure. …
