Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

SR-IOV must be active on an Intel E810-series NIC with at least one Virtual Function assigned to a guest VM. The attacker must control that guest VM at root or module-loading privilege level - the crafted VIRTCHNL message is delivered via VIRTCHNL_OP_ADD_RSS_CFG, which requires the ability to issue VIRTCHNL ioctls from within the guest, typically available to the guest OS kernel or to a loaded kernel module. Non-E810 NICs, systems without SR-IOV enabled, and kernels not loading the ice module are not affected. The CVSS vector PR:L reflects that guest-OS-level root (low privilege relative to the host) is sufficient; no host-side credentials are required. User interaction on the host side is not required. The limiting factor is hardware specificity: only environments where untrusted parties can obtain E810 VF access - shared cloud, NFV, or bare-metal colocation with VF passthrough - are realistically at risk.

Impact

The CVSS 8.8 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) is technically justified - a successful exploit crosses from an unprivileged guest VM into the host kernel - but the aggregate real-world risk is meaningfully lower than that raw score implies. EPSS at 0.18% (7th percentile) reflects low observed exploitation activity, this CVE is absent from the CISA KEV catalog, and no public exploit code has been identified; the described reproduction required a custom kernel module. Exploitation is gated behind a specific SR-IOV configuration with at least one VF assigned to a potentially hostile guest, which limits the exposed population to cloud providers, NFV infrastructure, and shared colocation environments. The CVSS scope-change flag (S:C) is well-supported: a guest tenant can directly panic the host kernel, impacting all co-tenants - even a mid-sized hosting operator in gdynia managing shared E810 SR-IOV tenants should treat this as urgent given the trivial reproducibility and availability of stable-branch patches. The EPSS signal and the absence of KEV suggest opportunistic exploitation has not yet materialized, but the low attack complexity (AC:L) once a VF foothold exists means that window may close quickly after publication.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A tenant with root access inside a guest VM to which an Intel E810 VF is directly assigned loads a kernel module that sends a crafted VIRTCHNL_OP_ADD_RSS_CFG message containing ptype=0xffff. The host kernel's ice driver processes the message in ice_parser_profile_init without bounds-checking ptype, executes set_bit(0xffff, prof->ptypes), and writes to host kernel memory 64 bytes past the end of the 1024-bit bitmap. Depending on what occupies adjacent memory, this results in either an immediate kernel NULL pointer dereference that crashes the host (and all co-tenant VMs) or a memory corruption primitive that a sophisticated attacker could chain toward host privilege escalation.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 14, 2026

Out-of-bounds bitmap write in the Linux kernel's Intel ICE SR-IOV driver allows a malicious Virtual Function guest to crash the host kernel or potentially escalate privileges to the host. The vulnerable function ice_parser_profile_init unconditionally passes caller-controlled ptype values from VIRTCHNL_OP_ADD_RSS_CFG into set_bit() against a statically sized 1024-bit bitmap, permitting a value such as 0xffff to write beyond the bitmap boundary and trigger a kernel NULL pointer dereference. No public exploit code has been identified and EPSS exploitation probability is low at 0.18%, but the CVSS 8.8 score and confirmed crash reproducibility signal real urgency for SR-IOV multi-tenant environments where stable-branch patches are already available.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade to a patched stable kernel: 6.12.101 or later on the 6.12 branch, 6.18.42 or later on the 6.18 branch, 7.1.6 or later on the 7.1 branch, or 7.2-rc5 or later for mainline pre-release users. Patch commits are available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/fe2f8d5a77adea38e889fe3d6cde1b76d4a635bf and its stable-branch counterparts. Distribution-specific backports from vendors tracking these stable trees (RHEL, SUSE, Debian, Ubuntu) should be monitored and applied as released. If an immediate kernel upgrade is not feasible, disabling SR-IOV on affected E810 NICs by executing 'echo 0 > /sys/class/net/<iface>/device/sriov_numvfs' eliminates the attack vector entirely; the trade-off is the loss of hardware-accelerated network virtualization for all VF tenants on that interface. Alternatively, restricting which VMs receive E810 VF passthrough to trusted workloads only - through hypervisor policy - limits the attacker population without requiring a kernel upgrade, though this does not eliminate the vulnerability.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The ice driver (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is the Linux kernel module for Intel E810-series 100GbE NICs, including the E810-C QSFP (PCI ID 8086:1592). SR-IOV partitions the physical NIC into Virtual Functions assignable to guest VMs; those guests communicate with the Physical Function driver over the VIRTCHNL protocol, and VIRTCHNL_OP_ADD_RSS_CFG is the standard mechanism for guests to configure Receive Side Scaling profiles. The function ice_parser_profile_init calls set_bit(rslt->ptype, prof->ptypes) where prof->ptypes is a DECLARE_BITMAP of ICE_FLOW_PTYPE_MAX (1024) bits. No bounds check is applied to rslt->ptype before the call, so any guest-supplied ptype value exceeding 1023 causes set_bit() to write beyond the bitmap into adjacent kernel memory. The root cause is equivalent to CWE-787 (Out-of-Bounds Write) against a fixed-size kernel bitmap. Reproduction was confirmed on kernel 7.1.0-rc1 with FW 4.91 0x800214af and ICE COMMS DDP 1.3.53.0, producing a kernel Oops at ice_parser_profile_init+0x2d/0x1d0.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ice: reject out-of-range ptype in ice_parser_profile_init

set_bit(rslt->ptype, prof->ptypes) operates on a DECLARE_BITMAP of ICE_FLOW_PTYPE_MAX (1024) bits. Nothing prevents a malicious VF from providing ptype >= 1024 through VIRTCHNL, resulting in a write past the end of the bitmap and a kernel page fault.

Reproduced with a custom kernel module injecting a crafted VIRTCHNL_OP_ADD_RSS_CFG on E810-C QSFP (8086:1592), FW 4.91 0x800214af 1.3909.0, ICE COMMS DDP 1.3.53.0, kernel 7.1.0-rc1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Intel ICE SR-IOV driver (CVE-2026-68128, CVSS 8.8) enables malicious guest virtual machines to crash the host kernel or escalate privileges, directly threatening service availability and security isolation in multi-tenant virtualization environments. Organizations operating virtualized infrastructure with guest workloads face immediate risk of kernel panics and potential cross-guest privilege boundary violations. Although current exploitation probability is low (EPSS 0.2%), confirmed crash reproducibility and high severity demand urgent patching of all affected SR-IOV deployments.
