Exploitation Conditions

The parent question must remain in a publicly visible state - if the question is also deleted or access-restricted, the API path is blocked before reaching the answer-level check. The attacker must know or enumerate a valid answer ID associated with a deleted or pending answer; ID enumeration is the primary practical barrier. No authentication is required (CVSS PR:N confirmed). Exploitation is strictly read-only and limited to answer content withheld by moderation (deleted or pending state); it does not expose credentials, other users' private data, or system internals. Deployments where all content requires authentication, or where the answer read API is not reachable from untrusted networks, are not meaningfully exposed.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N yields a 7.5 base score - network-reachable, zero-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation with rated-high confidentiality impact. However, EPSS at 0.17% (7th percentile) and the absence of a KEV listing or known POC together indicate very low observed exploitation interest. The true confidentiality impact is bounded: only deleted or pending answer content is exposed, not credentials, session tokens, or system internals. This is a case where CVSS numerically overstates operational risk - the data class is application content, not authentication material. Priority should scale with how sensitive the deleted/pending answer content is in a given deployment (e.g., a platform hosting legally sensitive draft content carries higher real-world risk than a low-sensitivity public forum). No conflicting signals exist between CVSS and description; both consistently indicate a remote, unauthenticated, read-only disclosure.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker identifies a public Apache Answer deployment and iterates over numeric or predictable answer IDs via direct HTTP GET requests to the single-answer read endpoint. Because the endpoint checks only whether the parent question is public - not whether the answer itself is deleted or pending - the server returns the full content of moderation-withheld answers. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv2 – Aug 06, 2026

Unauthenticated information disclosure in Apache Answer through 2.0.1 allows any remote user to retrieve deleted or pending answers via the single-answer read API path, provided the parent question remains publicly visible. The flaw bypasses moderation-state access controls, exposing content that was intentionally withheld from public view. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified; EPSS at 0.17% (7th percentile) reflects limited real-world exploitation interest despite the high CVSS score.

v1 Aug 05, 2026 - 15:50

Unauthorized information disclosure in Apache Answer through version 2.0.1 exposes deleted or pending answer content to unauthenticated users via the single-answer read path. When the parent question remains publicly visible, the access control logic fails to enforce the deleted or pending state on individual answers, allowing any actor to retrieve content that platform moderators or users explicitly removed or withheld from publication. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and a vendor-released patch (2.0.2) is available.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Apache Answer 2.0.2, which corrects the moderation-state access control check on the single-answer read path. Upgrade immediately following the vendor advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread/rq3ygd0j9cchkbmh99dqf8624s7r8y49. If upgrade is not immediately possible, place the Apache Answer instance behind an authenticated reverse proxy to require login before any API access - note this will break unauthenticated read access for public visitors, which may be unacceptable for public-facing communities. Alternatively, network-level ACLs restricting the single-answer API route to authenticated sessions only can reduce exposure, though implementation depends on the deployment's web server configuration. Neither workaround addresses the root-cause flaw and should be treated as temporary only.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache Answer is an open-source community Q&A platform under the Apache Software Foundation umbrella. The vulnerability stems from an incomplete access control check in the single-answer read endpoint: the server validates the parent question's visibility but fails to check the moderation state (deleted or pending) of the individual answer object being fetched. This maps to CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor), a design-level authorization gap rather than a memory-safety or injection flaw. CPE string cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_answer:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all versions through 2.0.1 are affected. Because answer IDs are likely sequential or guessable, enumeration of affected answers may require minimal effort.

DescriptionCVE.org

Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor vulnerability in Apache Answer.

This issue affects Apache Answer: through 2.0.1.

Deleted or pending answers could be retrieved by unauthorized users through the single-answer read path when the parent question remained visible, exposing answer content that should not have been accessible. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.0.2, which fixes the issue.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Answer versions through 2.0.1 contain an unauthenticated information disclosure vulnerability allowing unauthorized access to deleted and pending user answers that bypass moderation controls. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the vulnerability creates data protection and regulatory risk by exposing intentionally withheld content to any remote user.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Restrict single-answer read API to authenticated users; implement WAF rules to filter deleted and pending answers from responses; disable the affected endpoint if feasible; enable comprehensive access logging and alerting for pattern anomalies; document and test content deletion procedures to ensure compliance with privacy regulations including GDPR deletion requests.
