DescriptionCVE.org

FFmpeg through 8.1.2 contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability that allows attackers to cause heap corruption by supplying a crafted ffconcat file processed with the -safe 0 flag. The TY demuxer's demux_audio() function decrements packet size without bounds checking, producing a negative size value that is passed to memcpy() in shorten_decode_frame(), where conversion to size_t wraps the value to near SIZE_MAX and triggers reads beyond the source allocation and writes far beyond the Shorten decoder's bitstream buffer.

AnalysisAI

Out-of-bounds heap write in FFmpeg through 8.1.2 lets an attacker who supplies a crafted ffconcat file - processed with the -safe 0 flag - corrupt heap memory and potentially achieve code execution. The flaw chains the TY demuxer's demux_audio() (which decrements packet size without bounds checking) into the Shorten decoder's memcpy(), where a negative size wraps to near SIZE_MAX. Reported by VulnCheck with a vendor patch available; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI

FFmpeg is the de facto multimedia framework used for decoding, encoding, and transcoding audio/video across countless applications, servers, and OS distributions (CPE cpe:2.3:a:ffmpeg:ffmpeg:*). The bug is a CWE-787 out-of-bounds write rooted in an integer/signedness error: the TY demuxer's demux_audio() subtracts from a packet size field without validating the result stays non-negative, yielding a negative int. That value is later passed to memcpy() inside shorten_decode_frame() of the Shorten (SHN) lossless audio decoder, where the implicit int-to-size_t conversion wraps the negative number to a value near SIZE_MAX, driving an over-read of the source allocation and a massive over-write past the decoder's bitstream buffer. Reaching the code path requires the ffconcat/concat demuxer, which is only permitted to reference arbitrary paths when the -safe 0 protection is disabled.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply the vendor patch from commit de771bd52774a52d45b0e2c82e56995a1ef40df7 (PR 23767 at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/23767) by upgrading to a build that incorporates it beyond 8.1.2, and consult the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/ffmpeg-out-of-bounds-write-via-ty-demuxer-and-shorten-decoder). Where immediate patching is not possible, avoid running FFmpeg with -safe 0 on untrusted concat/ffconcat inputs (the default -safe 1 blocks the path that references attacker-controlled files, at the cost of restricting legitimate absolute-path concat use cases). As a further control, disable or blacklist the TY demuxer and Shorten decoder for untrusted media (e.g. via -f/-c restrictions or a build that excludes them), accepting that TY and SHN files will no longer be processable, and sandbox any transcoding service that handles user-supplied files to contain heap corruption.
