2DescriptionCVE.org
FFmpeg versions 0.7.1 through 8.1.2 contain an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the S/PDIF muxer that allows attackers to access memory beyond buffer boundaries by supplying a crafted DTS stream with a core_size value larger than the actual packet length. Attackers can exploit the missing bounds check in the spdif_header_dts4 function by providing a malicious DTS-HD audio stream during S/PDIF re-muxing to trigger unauthorized memory reads beyond the packet buffer.
AnalysisAI
Out-of-bounds memory read in FFmpeg's S/PDIF muxer (spdifenc.c) affects versions 0.7.1 through 8.1.2 when re-muxing DTS-HD audio to an S/PDIF (IEC 61937) container. The spdif_header_dts4 function trusts an attacker-controlled core_size field from a crafted DTS stream without validating it against the actual packet length, letting a malicious input read memory past the packet buffer to leak small amounts of adjacent process memory or crash the process. Reported by VulnCheck with an upstream fix available; no public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV.
Technical ContextAI
FFmpeg is the de-facto multimedia framework used by media players, transcoding pipelines, streaming servers, browsers, and countless embedded devices. The flaw lives in the S/PDIF output muxer (libavformat/spdifenc.c), which wraps compressed audio (here DTS/DTS-HD) into IEC 61937 frames for passthrough over digital audio interfaces. When handling the DTS4 (DTS-HD) sub-stream, spdif_header_dts4 reads a core_size value embedded in the bitstream and uses it to index/copy from the incoming packet buffer. This is a classic CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read): a missing sanity check that core_size does not exceed the real packet length allows the muxer to reference bytes beyond the allocated buffer. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:ffmpeg:ffmpeg:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, indicating the upstream FFmpeg project itself rather than a single downstream distribution.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply FFmpeg patch commit 6f80e2765492700622596af720534cef33dd31b4 (pull request 23661) or upgrade to a build that incorporates it once your distribution ships a tagged release beyond 8.1.2. Downstream users should rebuild or update their bundled FFmpeg libavformat and monitor https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/ffmpeg-out-of-bounds-read-via-s-pdif-muxer-spdifenc-c for a fixed version tag. As a compensating control where patching lags, avoid using the S/PDIF muxer for untrusted input - do not select the 'spdif' output format when transcoding user-supplied media (trade-off: breaks legitimate IEC 61937 passthrough workflows), and validate/reject DTS-HD inputs at ingest. Running conversion in a sandboxed, memory-hardened process (seccomp, ASAN in test, resource limits) further reduces the impact of a crash or leak.
