DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in systemd-tmpfiles. When processing a tmpfiles.d configuration entry that writes to a file, systemd-tmpfiles can follow a symbolic link placed by an unprivileged local user, and an existing safety check does not detect this specific case because it always treats transitions away from the root user as safe. On systems where a tmpfiles.d configuration targets a path an unprivileged user can influence, this could allow that user to redirect a privileged systemd-tmpfiles write to a file of their choosing, though the content written remains determined by the existing configuration rather than by the unprivileged user. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to integrity.

AnalysisAI

Symlink-following vulnerability (CWE-59) in systemd-tmpfiles allows a local, low-privileged user to redirect privileged file write operations to an attacker-controlled path on affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems. The flaw resides in the path resolution logic within chase.c, where a safety check incorrectly treats all transitions away from the root user as inherently safe - failing to detect attacker-placed symlinks at tmpfiles.d target path components. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Identify writable path component in tmpfiles.d target
Delivery
Place symlink at intermediate path before tmpfiles execution
Exploit
Await systemd-tmpfiles run at boot or scheduled activation
Execution
safety check in chase.c bypassed for non-root transition
Persist
Privileged write redirected to attacker-chosen file
Impact
Target file overwritten with configuration-defined content

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a local, authenticated session as a low-privileged user (PR:L per CVSS vector - no unauthenticated remote vector exists). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 6.3 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H) is consistent with the described attack: local access with low privileges is required, and the High attack complexity reflects the prerequisite that a specific tmpfiles.d configuration must exist where a user-influenceable path is targeted by a privileged write. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario A local user with a shell account on a RHEL system identifies a tmpfiles.d entry that writes to a file whose parent directory contains an intermediate component the attacker has write access to. Before the next systemd-tmpfiles execution - typically at system startup or via a systemd timer - the attacker replaces the writable intermediate directory with a symbolic link pointing toward a sensitive target such as /etc/cron.d/ or /etc/sudoers.d/. …
Remediation Apply Red Hat errata for the systemd package across affected RHEL 7, 8, 9, and 10 systems as they become available, tracked at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-16552 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2506073. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
