1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that attacker-controlled JPEG data reach the ESP-IDF hardware JPEG decode path (jpeg_parse_dqt_marker), i.e. the firmware must actually call the esp_driver_jpeg decoder on untrusted input, and the target must run an affected build (6.0.1, 5.5.4, 5.4.4, 5.3.5 or prior) on a chip with the JPEG codec. The concrete trigger is a JPEG DQT marker whose Tq nibble is outside 0..3. Per the CVSS vector no authentication or user interaction is required (PR:N/UI:N), but the real limiting factor is reachability: if the application only decodes trusted or locally-provisioned images, the AV:N rating overstates exposure and the vulnerability is effectively local - verify the JPEG ingest path per firmware. Impact is confined to denial of service (availability); no confidentiality or integrity effect is described. |
| Impact | The signals are consistent for a medium-to-high availability issue but do not indicate an emergency. CVSS 3.1 base is 7.5 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H - impact is availability-only (C:N/I:N), matching the description's DoS outcome, so despite the stack-overflow primitive there is no confirmed confidentiality or integrity/code-execution impact. The AV:N (network) rating should be treated with caution: exploitation requires that a malformed JPEG actually reach the JPEG decode API, which is application-dependent (e.g. a network camera stream or an HTTP/MQTT image upload makes it remote, whereas a locally supplied image does not) - verify the real attack surface against how each firmware sources JPEG data. No EPSS score, KEV entry, or public POC was provided, so this is not confirmed to be exploited in the wild; it reads as a robustness/DoS bug rather than a widely-weaponized threat. Priority should scale with exposure: firmware that decodes attacker-reachable JPEGs should patch promptly, while devices that only decode trusted/local images are lower urgency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can deliver a JPEG to a device whose firmware decodes it - for instance uploading an image to a network-connected ESP32-P4 appliance or serving a malicious frame to a client that fetches remote images - crafts a JPEG whose DQT marker sets the Tq nibble to a value of 4 or higher. When the driver parses the marker it writes out of bounds on the stack, corrupting memory and crashing the device, forcing a reboot or hang. No public exploit code was identified, and the practical reach depends on whether the JPEG source is attacker-controlled and network-accessible. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Jul 10, 2026
Denial of service in Espressif's ESP-IDF JPEG driver (versions 6.0.1, 5.5.4, 5.4.4, 5.3.5 and likely earlier) stems from an out-of-bounds stack write in jpeg_parse_dqt_marker(), where the attacker-controlled DQT marker Tq nibble indexes the qt_tbl array without a 0..3 bounds check. Any application that feeds untrusted JPEG data into the hardware JPEG decode path can be reliably crashed by a single malformed image. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and it is not listed in CISA KEV; the vendor has released a fix in 6.0.2 with backports pending for the 5.x branches.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: ESP-IDF 6.0.2 - upgrade to it on the 6.0.x branch and rebuild/reflash affected firmware. For devices pinned to the long-term-support branches, the fix is expected in 5.5.5, 5.4.5, and 5.3.6 (not yet released at time of analysis); until those tags ship, cherry-pick the upstream commits referenced in the advisory (e.g. 303c01305acb8ae5c4eb24a1786300681b4822a4 and the companion commits f2df45bc, 6ffafe8e, 7ccfc00f, 82c5c2da) which add the missing Tq range validation. As a compensating control where reflashing is not immediately feasible, restrict or filter untrusted JPEG input before it reaches the decoder - for example validate/reject images from network-facing endpoints, or gate the JPEG decode path behind an application-layer bounds check on DQT markers; the trade-off is that input filtering adds latency and only helps where the firmware controls the ingest path. Technical ContextAI · show details
ESP-IDF is Espressif's official SDK for the ESP32 family of microcontrollers, and the affected code lives in components/esp_driver_jpeg/jpeg_parse_marker.c, the driver that parses JPEG headers before handing data to the hardware JPEG codec (present on parts such as the ESP32-P4). A JPEG Define Quantization Table (DQT) marker encodes, per table, a byte whose low nibble (Tq) selects the destination quantization table slot; the JPEG standard permits only values 0 through 3. The driver uses this attacker-supplied Tq value directly as an index into the fixed-size qt_tbl array without range validation, so a crafted value of 4-15 writes past the end of the array. This is a classic CWE-121 stack-based buffer overflow: because qt_tbl resides on the stack, the write corrupts adjacent stack memory, and the reported consequence is a reliable crash rather than demonstrated code execution.

1DescriptionCVE.org
ESF-IDF is the Espressif Internet of Things (IOT) Development Framework. Versions 6.0.1, 5.5.4, 5.4.4, 5.3.5, and possibly prior contain an out-of-bounds write in jpeg_parse_dqt_marker() in components/esp_driver_jpeg/jpeg_parse_marker.c because the attacker-controlled DQT marker Tq nibble is used as an index into the qt_tbl array without validating that it is in the range 0..3, allowing malformed JPEG input to corrupt stack memory and reliably trigger a denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 6.0.2 and is expected to be fixed in versions 5.5.5, 5.4.5, and 5.3.6.
Executive ViewAI
A denial-of-service vulnerability in Espressif's ESP-IDF JPEG driver affects multiple active versions (6.0.1, 5.5.4, 5.4.4, 5.3.5 and earlier), allowing attackers to crash applications processing untrusted JPEG images and disrupt services across any organization with deployed ESP-based IoT or embedded systems. A patch is available for version 6.0.x, but 5.x branches await backports from the vendor. No public exploit currently identified, but the vulnerability is reliably triggered by a single malformed image.
Apply vendor patch: upgrade to ESP-IDF 6.0.2 for version 6.0.x deployments. For systems on 5.x branches pending backport availability, restrict JPEG decode operations to trusted image sources and disable automatic image processing from untrusted external inputs.
