Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires two concurrent conditions: Composer must be invoked with the -vvv (triple-verbose) debug flag, and at least one repository or package source must be configured with a credential embedded in the URL userinfo component (e.g., https://TOKEN@host/ format). This is not a default Composer configuration - the -vvv flag is explicitly user- or pipeline-supplied. Exploitation is limited by the need for the attacker to have access to the debug output, which may be a terminal session, log file, or CI/CD artifact store. The vulnerability does not affect Composer invocations without -vvv, nor does it affect credentials supplied via separate auth configuration files (auth.json) rather than inline URL embedding.

Impact

The NVD CVSS 3.1 score of 4.7 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) accurately reflects the constrained exploitation conditions: local access, high complexity due to the non-default -vvv flag requirement, and low-privilege execution. The confidentiality impact is rated High because leaked credentials (GitHub PATs, registry tokens) grant durable, out-of-band access to private repositories or package registries - far beyond just reading a file. However, the real-world risk is significantly shaped by CI/CD deployment patterns: -vvv is commonly enabled in build pipelines for debugging, and log artifacts are frequently stored in artifact repositories or shared dashboards, potentially widening exposure beyond strictly local access. No EPSS data was provided, and there is no KEV listing or public POC, suggesting no confirmed active exploitation. The primary risk is passive credential harvesting from stored logs rather than active targeted exploitation. CVSS attack complexity 'High' is appropriate given the non-default flag requirement, though in CI environments where verbose logging is standard practice, the effective complexity is closer to Low.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A developer or CI/CD pipeline invokes Composer with -vvv to debug a package resolution failure against a private GitHub registry configured with a PAT in the URL (https://TOKEN@github.com/org/repo). Composer prints the unsanitized URL to stdout, which is captured in the CI/CD build log. A threat actor with read access to the artifact repository or shared log dashboard extracts the PAT and uses it to clone private repositories or push malicious packages. No public exploit code is required - the leak occurs passively during legitimate tool usage.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 08, 2026

Credential leakage in Composer PHP dependency manager exposes sensitive tokens - such as GitHub Personal Access Tokens embedded in repository URLs - to debug output when the tool is invoked with the -vvv verbosity flag. Affected versions prior to 2.2.29 (LTS branch) and 2.10.2 fail to sanitize username-slot URL credentials (e.g., https://TOKEN@host/) across three components: AuthHelper, Url::sanitize, and ProcessExecutor. An attacker or co-located user with access to terminal output or CI/CD log artifacts could extract valid authentication tokens from this debug output. No public exploit code has been identified and this vulnerability is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Composer to version 2.2.29 (LTS branch) or 2.10.2 (stable branch), which apply credential sanitization in AuthHelper, Url::sanitize, and ProcessExecutor. Fixed commits are available at https://github.com/composer/composer/commit/6bd66874ae523ecb69aca5964487a0cdfda03ef8 and https://github.com/composer/composer/commit/8887ad76fbd830cb1861a2b1fd8ead78ed1fa1ec; release pages at https://github.com/composer/composer/releases/tag/2.10.2 and https://github.com/composer/composer/releases/tag/2.2.29. As an immediate workaround prior to patching, remove -vvv from any automated or CI/CD invocations of Composer and restrict access to build log artifacts where debug output may be persisted. If tokens have been exposed via prior -vvv runs, rotate all affected credentials (GitHub PATs, Packagist tokens) immediately, as the window of exposure is unknown. Note that removing -vvv may reduce debuggability of build failures; teams should implement structured credential injection via environment variables rather than URL embedding as a longer-term remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Composer (cpe:2.3:a:composer:composer:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is the de facto dependency manager for the PHP ecosystem, managing package resolution and download via authenticated repository URLs. URLs embedding credentials in the userinfo component (RFC 3986 syntax: https://TOKEN@host/) are a common pattern for token-based Git hosting authentication (e.g., GitHub PAT injection). CWE-532 (Insertion of Sensitive Information into Log File) describes the root cause class: the three code paths - AuthHelper, Url::sanitize, and ProcessExecutor - each participate in constructing or logging command execution details during -vvv verbose runs, but none applied credential-stripping to the userinfo segment before emitting output. The -vvv flag is typically used in CI/CD pipelines for debugging failed installs, making log artifact exposure a plausible threat path.

DescriptionCVE.org

Composer is a dependency Manager for the PHP language. Prior to 2.2.29 and 2.10.2, when Composer is run with -vvv debug verbosity, it could print a credential embedded in the username slot of a repository or package URL, such as a GitHub Personal Access Token in https://TOKEN@host/, to debug output because AuthHelper, Url::sanitize, and ProcessExecutor did not sanitize username-only URL credentials. This issue is fixed in versions 2.2.29 and 2.10.2.
