node-tar is a tar archive manipulation library for Node.js. Prior to 7.5.18, tar.replace accepts a checksum-valid tar header with a negative base-256 encoded entry size, causing the archive scanner to make no progress while repeatedly parsing the same header. This issue is fixed in version 7.5.18.

AnalysisAI
Denial of service in node-tar prior to 7.5.18 allows remote attackers to hang a Node.js application by feeding it a crafted tar archive: a checksum-valid header carrying a negative base-256 encoded entry size makes the tar.replace scanner advance zero bytes and re-parse the same header forever. No public exploit or active exploitation is identified at time of analysis, but the CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 reflects the high, easily-reachable availability impact. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that the target Node.js application call node-tar's tar.replace on archive data an attacker can influence (e.g., an uploaded or fetched tarball); the malicious input is a tar header with a valid checksum but a negative base-256 encoded entry size. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine availability risk but not a top-tier emergency. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An application uses tar.replace to update entries in tar archives that users can upload (for example a package-processing or backup service). An attacker uploads a specially crafted tarball containing a header with a valid checksum but a negative base-256 encoded size; when the service scans it, the tar.replace loop spins on that header forever, consuming CPU and hanging the Node.js event loop until the process is killed. … |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: node-tar 7.5.18 - upgrade the direct or transitive dependency to 7.5.18 or later (npm install tar@^7.5.18, and run npm audit / update lockfiles to pull the fix into transitive uses). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
