Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the victim uses a Metalink-enabled Wget build AND actively retrieves a Metalink document from a server the attacker controls, has compromised, or can redirect the victim toward; the malicious trigger is a Metalink URL element consisting entirely of whitespace. Limiting factors: Wget must be compiled with Metalink support and be processing Metalink content (not a default plain single-file fetch), the victim must initiate the connection to the attacker-controlled server, and the confirmed impact is limited to availability (a crash / abnormal behavior) with no vendor-credited code execution or confidentiality impact.

Impact

The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 8.7 with a vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) that scores only availability impact - consistent with the description, which states 'abnormal program behavior' (a crash), not code execution or data disclosure. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided, so real-world exploitation pressure appears low: this is a client-side crash requiring the victim to point Wget at an attacker-controlled server with Metalink processing active, not a server-side or wormable flaw. The score's PR:N/UI:N framing overstates opportunistic risk for a tool that a user must deliberately invoke against a hostile endpoint; treated as a moderate-priority hardening patch rather than an emergency. Note a tension in the data: the input Tags include 'Information Disclosure' and 'Buffer Overflow', but the CVSS impact metrics set confidentiality (VC:N) to none and describe only availability impact - an underread could in principle read adjacent memory, but the vendor did not credit a confidentiality impact, so info-disclosure should be treated as unverified.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who controls or has compromised a download server (or can MITM/redirect a victim's Wget request) serves a Metalink document whose URL field contains only spaces or tabs. When the victim runs Wget with Metalink processing against that server, clean_metalink_string() reads before the start of the heap buffer, causing the process to behave abnormally or crash. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the demonstrated impact is denial of service rather than code execution.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 07, 2026

Denial of service in GNU Wget through 1.25.0 lets a malicious or compromised HTTP(S) server crash the client by serving a Metalink document whose URL element contains only whitespace, causing clean_metalink_string() in src/metalink.c to decrement a pointer past the start of the heap buffer. The out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) produces abnormal program behavior and is reported by VulnCheck; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV. The fix landed upstream in GitLab commit 37a40fc.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); a released patched version was not independently confirmed in the input - apply GitLab commit 37a40fc (https://gitlab.com/gnuwget/wget/-/commit/37a40fcb450153f69537c7cbc2a7a4fb0b6f7826) or the corresponding patched package from your OS distribution once published, and reference the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/gnu-wget-heap-buffer-underread-via-metalink-url-parsing). Until patched, the most effective compensating control is to avoid Metalink processing: do not pass --metalink / --input-metalink and do not fetch .meta4/.metalink documents from untrusted servers, or use a Wget build compiled without Metalink support (trade-off: loses multi-mirror/chunked download and integrity-checking features). As defense against the crash effect, avoid running automated Wget jobs that follow untrusted redirects to arbitrary servers and restrict which endpoints scripted Wget invocations may contact.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Wget is a ubiquitous command-line file-retrieval utility. The affected code path is its Metalink support (src/metalink.c), which parses .metalink/Metalink-formatted download descriptors that enumerate mirror URLs, hashes, and chunk metadata. clean_metalink_string() normalizes URL strings by trimming surrounding whitespace; when a URL consists entirely of whitespace, the trailing-trim logic walks a pointer backward with no lower bound and decrements it before the start of the allocated buffer, producing a heap buffer underread. This is a classic CWE-125 out-of-bounds read caused by a missing boundary/empty-input check on attacker-controlled parser input, made reachable because the malicious content originates from the remote server the client is instructed to fetch.

DescriptionCVE.org

GNU Wget through 1.25.0, fixed in commit 37a40fc, contains a heap buffer underread vulnerability in the clean_metalink_string() function within src/metalink.c that allows a malicious server to trigger memory corruption by serving a Metalink document containing a whitespace-only URL. Attackers can cause the function to decrement a pointer past the start of the buffer when processing an all-whitespace Metalink URL, potentially leading to abnormal program behavior.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

GNU Wget versions through 1.25.0 are vulnerable to denial-of-service attacks where malicious or compromised HTTP(S) servers can crash the client, disrupting CI/CD pipelines, package management, and infrastructure automation. Organizations deploying Wget for automated downloads face service interruption risk from server-side exploitation. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
