The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the victim to process an attacker-supplied WavPack-encoded audio stream through the gst-plugins-good WavPack decoder element - this includes explicit playback in any GStreamer-backed media player, autoplay in browsers/embeds that route audio through GStreamer, automatic thumbnail or metadata extraction by GNOME/KDE file managers and indexers, and server-side transcoding pipelines that accept user-uploaded audio. Limiting factors: UI:R user interaction is required per CVSS, the vulnerable decoder element must be installed and selected by GStreamer's autoplugger (default on RHEL desktop installs with multimedia support, not on minimal server installs), and successful RCE additionally requires bypassing ASLR/heap hardening and any sandboxing (Flatpak, Firejail, browser content sandbox) the consuming application applies.

Impact

The provided CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:H (7.6 High) accurately reflects a network-reachable file-format bug that requires the victim to open or preview a crafted WavPack stream - automatic decoding by browser pipelines, mail clients, or desktop thumbnailers materially lowers the practical UI:R barrier. No EPSS score, KEV entry, or public POC was supplied, and no SSVC decision is published, so the real-world exploitation signal is currently weak; however, heap overflows in GStreamer decoders have historically been weaponized (e.g., prior FLAC and Matroska cases), and the deterministic integer-overflow pattern is favorable for exploit development. Net assessment: a credible mid-tier priority - patch on normal cycles for servers, but treat as elevated on multi-user desktops and any service that auto-decodes user-supplied audio. Note one gap: vendor advisory references return None status and the Red Hat Bugzilla ID 2487615 is referenced but its public state is not confirmed in the input.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker hosts a malicious .wv file on a website, sends it as an email attachment, or embeds it in a container format processed by GStreamer; when the victim opens the file in a player like Totem/Rhythmbox/VLC-with-GStreamer, or simply navigates a directory whose file manager auto-generates audio thumbnails, gst_wavpack_dec_handle_frame() under-allocates and the WavPack library corrupts the heap. With careful heap grooming this can be escalated from a crash (DoS) to arbitrary code execution in the user's session; no public POC is identified at time of analysis, but the deterministic integer-overflow primitive is a well-understood building block for exploit developers.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jun 15, 2026

Heap memory corruption in the WavPack audio decoder of GStreamer's gst-plugins-good package allows remote attackers to crash applications or potentially achieve arbitrary code execution when a victim opens a malicious WavPack (.wv) audio file. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-53705 and reported by Red Hat, affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 7, 8, 9, and 10, and stems from an integer overflow during buffer size calculation that produces an undersized heap allocation later overrun by decoded samples. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV, but the multimedia decoder attack surface combined with RCE potential makes it a meaningful patching priority.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis - the Red Hat security page and Bugzilla 2487615 are the canonical tracking URLs and should be monitored for the fixed gst-plugins-good package NVR for each of RHEL 7, 8, 9, and 10. Once errata publish, update gst-plugins-good with 'dnf update gst-plugins-good' (or 'yum update' on RHEL 7 ELS) and restart any long-running media or indexing services (tracker-miner, rygel, browsers, media players) so they reload the patched plugin. As compensating controls until patches land, you can remove or rename the WavPack decoder element (e.g., /usr/lib64/gstreamer-1.0/libgstwavpack.so) which prevents the vulnerable code path at the cost of breaking legitimate .wv playback, disable desktop thumbnailing/auto-preview for audio in GNOME/KDE file managers, block .wv attachments at the mail gateway, and advise users not to open WavPack files from untrusted sources.

Technical ContextAI · show details

GStreamer is the dominant Linux multimedia framework, and gst-plugins-good ships the WavPack decoder element used by media players, browsers, file managers (for thumbnailing/preview), and indexing daemons such as Tracker. The root cause is CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound): gst_wavpack_dec_handle_frame() computes the output buffer size as 4 * block_samples * channels using 32-bit signed arithmetic before promoting to the wider allocation-size type. Attacker-controlled header fields can drive that multiplication to wrap, yielding a tiny heap allocation; the upstream WavPack library then writes decoded PCM samples based on the original (unwrapped) dimensions, producing a classic heap buffer overflow adjacent to allocator metadata and neighboring chunks. Because the overflow happens before promotion to size_t, both 32-bit and 64-bit builds are affected identically.

DescriptionCVE.org

A flaw was found in GStreamer's WavPack audio decoder in gst-plugins-good. When processing a specially crafted WavPack file, an integer overflow in the buffer size calculation (4 * block_samples * channels) in gst_wavpack_dec_handle_frame() causes a very small heap allocation. The WavPack library then writes decoded audio samples far beyond the allocated buffer, resulting in heap memory corruption. This affects both 32-bit and 64-bit systems since the arithmetic is performed in 32-bit integers before promotion to the allocation size type. A remote attacker could use this flaw to crash an application or potentially execute arbitrary code by convincing a user to open a malicious WavPack audio file.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

GStreamer's audio processing functionality contains a critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-53705) that enables remote code execution on Red Hat systems through malicious audio files, creating operational risk across RHEL 7-10 infrastructure with no currently available vendor patch. Organizations must immediately implement interim controls to reduce exposure since standard patching cannot resolve this threat. Any system processing audio from external or untrusted sources is at risk.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Disable WavPack audio processing functionality where not operationally required; implement file-type whitelisting to block .wv files from untrusted sources; restrict audio processing to isolated or sandboxed environments; deploy network controls to limit external audio file ingestion; monitor GStreamer process behavior for memory corruption indicators.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Integer overflow occurs when an arithmetic operation produces a result that exceeds the maximum value a given integer type can store.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
