Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated Concrete CMS administrator account that has been granted page type composer form editing rights (CVSS PR:H), plus the ability to upload a file through the standard Concrete CMS file uploader - both are normal admin-tier capabilities rather than non-default features. The vulnerable parameter is specifically ptComposerFormLayoutSetControlCustomTemplate within the composer form layout save flow, and the RCE escalation specifically depends on the file uploader accepting PHP payloads inside files named with permitted extensions such as .png. Limiting factors: no anonymous or low-privilege user can trigger this, no end-user interaction is required (UI:N), and the target must be running Concrete CMS 5.0 through 9.5.0 with a webserver configuration that executes PHP from the uploads directory (most default LAMP-style deployments do).

Impact

The vendor-assigned CVSS v4.0 base of 9.4 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N) reflects network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation with no user interaction, but it requires high privileges - specifically an administrator account that already holds composer form editing rights - which materially limits the attacker population. The high subsequent-system impact metrics (SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) indicate the vendor believes successful exploitation can pivot beyond the CMS process boundary, which is consistent with arbitrary PHP execution under the webserver account. EPSS score and KEV status are not provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood and confirmed in-the-wild use cannot be asserted; no public exploit is identified at time of analysis. Real-world priority should be treated as high for any Concrete CMS deployment with multiple admin-tier users (insider-threat / compromised-credential scenarios), and moderate for tightly held single-admin deployments - the privilege prerequisite is the dominant risk modulator.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A disgruntled or compromised mid-tier administrator who holds composer form editing rights first uploads a PHP webshell disguised as image.png through the standard file manager (accepted because validation is extension-only), then saves a page type composer form layout where the ptComposerFormLayoutSetControlCustomTemplate field contains a traversal path like '../../../../application/files/0000/0000/0001/image.png'. When the layout is rendered, Concrete CMS includes the uploaded file as PHP, executing the attacker's code in the webserver context and yielding full server-side command execution.

AnalysisAIv1 – May 21, 2026

Authenticated remote code execution in Concrete CMS 9.5.0 and earlier allows an administrator with composer form editing privileges to chain a path traversal flaw in the ptComposerFormLayoutSetControlCustomTemplate field with the platform's permissive file uploader to execute arbitrary PHP on the server. The vendor scored this 9.4 (CVSS v4.0) reflecting high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact across both the vulnerable component and downstream subsequent systems. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not currently listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Concrete CMS 9.5.1 or later, which is referenced in the vendor release notes at https://documentation.concretecms.org/9-x/developers/introduction/version-history/951-release-notes as the patched version addressing this issue. Until the upgrade can be applied, restrict the 'edit composer forms' permission to the smallest possible set of trusted administrators and audit recent assignments of that right, since the entire attack surface depends on it; additionally consider blocking write access to page type composer layouts at the web tier (WAF rule on requests carrying the ptComposerFormLayoutSetControlCustomTemplate parameter containing '../' or absolute paths) which has the side effect of breaking legitimate template customization. As a hardening measure, reconfigure the webserver or PHP to refuse execution of .php content inside the file-storage upload directories (e.g., an Apache 'php_flag engine off' or nginx location block), which mitigates the uploader's extension-only validation flaw but may interfere with any legitimate dynamic content stored there.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Concrete CMS is a PHP-based content management system whose page type composer allows administrators to define custom form layouts via template parameters. The vulnerable parameter, ptComposerFormLayoutSetControlCustomTemplate, is consumed when saving composer layouts and is passed into a PHP include/require path without sanitizing '../' traversal sequences - the textbook root cause classified by CWE-98 (Improper Control of Filename for Include/Require Statement, i.e., PHP Remote File Inclusion / Local File Inclusion). The exploitability is amplified by Concrete CMS's file uploader, which validates uploads by file extension only and therefore happily stores PHP source code inside files named with image extensions such as .png; an LFI primitive that can reference such an uploaded file becomes a full RCE primitive. The single affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:concrete_cms:concrete_cms across versions up to and including 9.5.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

Concrete CMS 9.5.0 and below fails to sanitize path traversal sequences in the ptComposerFormLayoutSetControlCustomTemplate field when saving page type composer form layouts. An authenticated rogue administrator with composer form editing rights can exploit this to include arbitrary readable files on the server. Combined with the file uploader's extension-only validation (which permits PHP code in files saved with image extensions like .png), this can result in authenticated remote code execution. The Concrete CMS security team gave this vulnerability a CVSS v.4.0 score of 9.4 with vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H   Thanks Yonatan Drori (Tenzai) for reporting.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Concrete CMS versions 9.5.0 and earlier contain a critical vulnerability allowing authenticated administrators with form editing privileges to execute arbitrary code and gain complete control over vulnerable servers. Any organization running these versions faces immediate risk of data breach and system compromise through insider threats or compromised administrative accounts. No vendor patch is currently available, making urgent interim protective measures essential to reduce exposure.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Restrict composer form editing privileges to a minimal set of trusted administrators and regularly audit assignments; (2) Disable composer form functionality entirely if not operationally critical; (3) Implement detailed monitoring and alerting on administrative form creation, modification, and file upload activities; (4) Enforce network segmentation to limit lateral movement scope if exploitation occurs; (5) Deploy Web Application Firewall rules to detect and block suspicious file upload patterns targeting PHP execution; (6) Establish change control procedures requiring secondary approval for admin form modifications.

Attack Technique

Local File Inclusion vulnerabilities occur when an application accepts user-controlled input to specify which file should be loaded or executed, typically through functions like PHP's `include()`, `require()`, or `fopen()`.

Path traversal exploits occur when applications use user-controlled input to construct file system paths without proper validation.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
