Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target operate a cPanel/WHM or WP Squared DNS Cluster (the affected feature is the DNS Cluster system specifically - standalone WHM installations without clustering are not exposed) AND that the attacker hold a man-in-the-middle position on the network path between two cluster nodes, since the bug is failure to validate the peer's TLS certificate. No authentication or user interaction is required against the vulnerable endpoint (PR:N/UI:N), and exploitation works against the default DNS Cluster configuration once clustering is enabled. Limiting factors: attacker must already be path-adjacent (BGP hijack, ARP/DNS poisoning on a shared segment, or control of upstream infrastructure), and only cluster credentials - not arbitrary WHM data - are directly disclosed; deployments that tunnel cluster traffic over a private VPN or dedicated link materially reduce realistic exposure.

Impact

The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, C:H/I:L/A:N, score 8.2) reflects network-reachable, unauthenticated exploitation with high confidentiality impact, which aligns with stolen cluster credentials. However, EPSS is only 0.03% (7th percentile) and SSVC records Exploitation: none, meaning no observed activity. SSVC also marks the issue Automatable: yes with partial technical impact, which is consistent with MITM tooling but is offset by the practical requirement that the attacker already occupy a privileged network position between two cooperating cluster nodes. There is tension between the high CVSS score and the low EPSS/SSVC exploitation signal: the CVSS scoring assumes the MITM precondition is met, while real-world exploitation requires path-adjacent positioning that most cluster deployments do not expose to untrusted networks. No KEV listing and no public exploit reduce urgency below what the 8.2 score alone suggests, but credential theft consequences justify prompt patching for any cluster crossing untrusted links.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has compromised an upstream router, ISP segment, or DNS resolver between two cPanel DNS Cluster peers intercepts the outbound TLS connection from the source WHM server to a peer, presents an attacker-controlled certificate that the client accepts because verification is disabled, and captures the cluster API credentials submitted in the request. With those credentials the attacker can authenticate to the legitimate peer's WHM API and read or modify DNS zone data across the cluster. No public PoC is identified at this time.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jun 08, 2026

Credential interception in cPanel/WHM and WP Squared DNS Cluster system allows network-positioned attackers to perform man-in-the-middle attacks because SSL/TLS certificate verification is disabled when DNS Cluster nodes communicate. An attacker able to intercept traffic between cluster peers can impersonate a legitimate DNS Cluster server and capture authentication credentials transmitted during the request. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and EPSS exploitation probability is very low (0.03%), but SSVC marks the flaw as automatable with partial technical impact.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available - upgrade cPanel/WHM to 11.126.0.59, 11.130.0.23, 11.132.0.32, 11.134.0.26, or 11.136.0.10 (whichever matches your release tier), and upgrade WP Squared to 11.136.1.12, per the cPanel Security Advisory at https://support.cpanel.net/hc/en-us/articles/40437241987607-Security-CVE-2026-32992-cPanel-WHM-WP2-Security-Update-May-13-2026. Until patching is complete, restrict DNS Cluster traffic (TCP/2087 WHM API) to a dedicated management VLAN or VPN between trusted cluster peers and rotate any cluster API credentials that may have been exposed to untrusted paths; do not expose cluster endpoints to the public internet. As a defensive measure, audit DNS Cluster member lists and remove any unrecognized nodes, and after upgrading rotate cluster access hashes so previously captured credentials become invalid - note that aggressive network segmentation may break legitimate cross-datacenter clustering and credential rotation requires re-authorizing each peer.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is rooted in CWE-295 (Improper Certificate Validation): the DNS Cluster subsystem in cPanel/WHM and WP Squared establishes TLS connections between cluster nodes but does not validate the peer certificate against a trust anchor or check hostname binding. cPanel's DNS Clustering allows multiple WHM servers to share DNS zone data over an authenticated API, and credentials for that API are passed to the remote node during synchronization. Without certificate validation, the TLS channel provides encryption but no authentication of the remote endpoint, so any attacker who can redirect or intercept the connection (e.g., via ARP/BGP/DNS spoofing or a rogue upstream) can terminate the TLS session and harvest the cluster credentials in plaintext.

DescriptionCVE.org

SSL verification is disabled in the DNS Cluster system. This could allow for a malicious server to man-in-the-middle the request and capture credentials.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

cPanel/WHM and WP Squared DNS Cluster users face credential interception risk from attackers positioned on internal networks who can impersonate legitimate DNS servers due to disabled SSL/TLS verification. Successful attacks could grant administrative control over DNS infrastructure, enabling service disruption or data manipulation. Organizations managing critical DNS through these platforms should treat patching as high-priority infrastructure security work.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch. Interim: Implement network segmentation to restrict DNS Cluster node communication to trusted subnets only; enable and monitor authentication logging for anomalous cluster credential access.
