Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must achieve and maintain a network-adjacent MITM position (AV:A) between the client and Dovecot server, meaning layer-2 or layer-3 control. The attack targets SCRAM authentication with TLS channel binding enabled; if channel binding is disabled or a different auth mechanism is used, the vulnerability does not apply. High complexity (AC:H) suggests the attacker must possess knowledge of SCRAM protocol specifics and the ability to forge mathematically or cryptographically valid base64 exchanges that match the TLS session context. No authentication is required from the attacker (PR:N), and no user interaction is required (UI:N) - the attack operates entirely on protocol messages.

Impact

CVSS 6.8 with AV:A/AC:H reflects moderate risk: the attacker vector is adjacent (local network or compromised intermediate host), complexity is high (requires precise crafting and positioning), but impact is severe (full confidentiality and integrity compromise). EPSS data is not provided, limiting exploitation probability estimation. No CISA KEV status is indicated, suggesting active exploitation has not been confirmed by federal authorities at time of disclosure. The absence of public POC code slightly lowers immediate operational risk, but the attack is technically feasible and would not require elevated privileges. Real-world risk depends heavily on network topology: attacks are most viable in scenarios with wireless networks, shared infrastructure (cloud, hosting), or compromised intermediaries. Organizations with air-gapped or tightly controlled mail server networks face lower practical risk despite the vulnerability's technical severity.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker on a shared network (e.g., coffee shop WiFi, corporate guest network, or compromised ISP infrastructure) intercepts SCRAM authentication handshakes between a mail client and Dovecot. By crafting malicious base64 SCRAM messages that forge channel binding data, the attacker convinces both parties to complete authentication despite the attacker's MITM position. Once authenticated, the attacker proxies encrypted mail traffic, decrypting and reading all messages. High attack complexity reflects the requirement to craft valid base64 structures and timing - this is not a simple sniffing attack.

AnalysisAIv1 – May 12, 2026

Man-in-the-middle attackers positioned between OX Dovecot Pro and clients can forge SCRAM TLS channel binding via specially crafted base64 exchanges, allowing eavesdropping on encrypted communications. The attack requires network-level access and knowledge of channel binding mechanics but yields complete confidentiality compromise. No public exploit code is known, and patched versions are available from Open-Xchange.

RemediationAI

Upgrade OX Dovecot Pro to the patched version specified in Open-Xchange advisory OXDC-ADV-2026-0002 (consult https://documentation.open-xchange.com/dovecot/security/advisories/csaf/2026/oxdc-adv-2026-0002.json for exact version and timing). If immediate patching is not feasible, implement compensating controls: restrict SCRAM authentication to internal, trusted networks only by using firewall rules or Dovecot ACLs to block external SCRAM connections; alternatively, enforce certificate pinning or mutual TLS authentication to prevent MITM positioning. Both workarounds degrade user experience (e.g., external mail clients may fail) and do not address the root cause, making patching the primary remediation path.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SCRAM (Salted Challenge Response Authentication Mechanism) with TLS channel binding is an authentication protocol that binds the SASL authentication to the underlying TLS session to prevent credential relay and MITM attacks. Channel binding embeds proof of the TLS connection into the authentication exchange; the vulnerability allows attackers to forge or replay this binding by manipulating base64-encoded SCRAM messages. CWE-99 (Improper Control of Resource Identifiers) suggests the vulnerability stems from inadequate validation or verification of channel binding data structures. OX Dovecot Pro is the commercial variant of Dovecot, a widely-used IMAP/POP3 mail server.

DescriptionNVD

Attacker can use a specially crafted base64 exchange between Dovecot and Client to fake SCRAM TLS channel binding. This requires that the attacker is able to position itself between Dovecot and the client connection. If successful, the attacker can eavesdrop communications between Dovecot and client as MITM proxy. Install fixed version. No publicly available exploits are known.
