GFI HelpDesk before 4.99.9 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the template group creation and editing functionality that allows authenticated administrators to inject arbitrary JavaScript by manipulating the companyname POST parameter without HTML sanitization. Attackers can inject malicious scripts through the companyname field that execute in the browsers of any administrator viewing the Templates > Groups page.
AnalysisAI
GFI HelpDesk before version 4.99.9 allows authenticated administrators to inject stored cross-site scripting (XSS) payloads via the companyname parameter in template group creation and editing, with malicious scripts executing in the browsers of other administrators viewing the Templates > Groups page. The attack requires administrative credentials and user interaction (victim viewing the affected page), but succeeds against all administrator accounts with access to that interface.
Technical ContextAI
The vulnerability is a stored cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) in the template group management module of GFI HelpDesk. The vulnerability stems from inadequate input validation and output encoding on the companyname POST parameter. When administrators create or edit template groups, the companyname field is accepted without HTML sanitization or character escaping, then stored in the application database. When any administrator subsequently navigates to the Templates > Groups administrative interface, the malicious script is retrieved from storage and rendered in the browser without encoding, allowing JavaScript execution in the context of the administrator's session. This is a server-side input validation failure combined with improper output encoding on a reflected administrative page.
RemediationAI
Upgrade GFI HelpDesk to version 4.99.9 or later, which includes HTML sanitization and proper output encoding for the companyname parameter and related template group fields. Download the patched version from https://gfi.ai/products-and-solutions/email-and-messaging-solutions/helpdesk/resources/product-releases. For organizations unable to upgrade immediately, implement the following compensating controls: restrict administrative console access via network segmentation or firewall rules to trusted internal networks only, disable or severely restrict the Template Groups feature in the GFI HelpDesk administrative UI if not actively used, and audit the Templates > Groups page regularly for suspicious script content in existing template group names. These workarounds do not eliminate the vulnerability but reduce the attack surface and detection latency. Note that network segmentation may impact administrative workflow if remote administration is required.
