| Exploitation Conditions | No special conditions - remote unauthenticated exploitation against default configurations of Firebird database server. The vulnerability triggers during the pre-authentication connection handshake phase, before any credential validation occurs. Exploitation requires only: (1) network connectivity to the Firebird service port (default TCP 3050), and (2) ability to send crafted TCP packets with out-of-order CNCT_specific_data segments. No user interaction (UI:N), no elevated privileges (PR:N), and no complex timing or race conditions (AC:L) are required. Exploitation is NOT limited by: authentication mechanisms (occurs before login), database configuration settings, enabled features, or specific deployment modes. The attack surface is maximally exposed for any Firebird instance reachable over a network. Limiting factors that reduce practical risk: most production Firebird deployments are on internal networks behind firewalls rather than directly Internet-facing; impact is limited to availability (crash) with no confidentiality or integrity compromise; attacker must have knowledge of target server IP and port through reconnaissance or prior knowledge. |
| Impact | Real-world risk is MODERATE-HIGH for denial-of-service but requires nuanced interpretation of available signals. CVSS 8.2 accurately reflects the unauthenticated network attack surface (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) and high availability impact (A:H), though the integrity impact is rated Low rather than None. The attack complexity is genuinely low - no special timing, race conditions, or configuration prerequisites beyond network reachability. However, multiple factors limit practical risk: (1) No CISA KEV listing indicates this is not being exploited at scale in the wild. (2) No public proof-of-concept code identified in references, raising the skill threshold for opportunistic attackers. (3) The impact is purely availability (server crash) with no data exfiltration, persistence, or lateral movement capability - this is a nuisance DoS, not a foothold for deeper compromise. (4) Firebird databases are typically deployed in internal/trusted networks rather than directly Internet-facing, reducing attacker reach. (5) Patches are available across all supported major versions (3.x, 4.x, 5.x), providing clear remediation. SSVC assessment: Exploitation=none (not observed), Automatable=yes (no user interaction), Technical Impact=partial (availability only) suggests scheduled patching rather than emergency response. Organizations with Internet-exposed Firebird instances or untrusted network segments should prioritize patching; those with perimeter controls and network segmentation can treat this as standard maintenance. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker on the network (local LAN or Internet if database is exposed) identifies a Firebird database server listening on TCP port 3050 through port scanning. Without requiring any credentials, the attacker crafts malicious TCP packets containing CNCT_specific_data segments intentionally transmitted in reverse or random order during the initial connection handshake phase. The Firebird server's authentication parser attempts to process these out-of-sequence segments, triggering the Array.grow() integer underflow, which causes a segmentation fault and immediate server crash. Legitimate clients lose connectivity until an administrator manually restarts the database service. The attacker can repeat this process indefinitely to maintain denial-of-service, disrupting business operations dependent on the database. No public proof-of-concept code has been identified, but the attack mechanism is straightforward enough for skilled attackers to reproduce from the vulnerability description. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Apr 17, 2026
Remote denial-of-service in Firebird database server versions prior to 5.0.4, 4.0.7, and 3.0.14 allows unauthenticated network attackers to crash the server via malformed authentication packets. Exploitable by sending out-of-order CNCT_specific_data segments during connection setup, triggering a negative size calculation and segmentation fault. No authentication, credentials, or special configuration required - only knowledge of server IP and port. CVSS 8.2 (High) with network vector, low complexity, and no privileges required. No public exploit code or active exploitation (CISA KEV) identified at time of analysis, though the attack surface is maximally exposed given the unauthenticated network vector and low complexity (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N).
RemediationAI
Upgrade to patched Firebird versions immediately: 5.0.4 for 5.x deployments, 4.0.7 for 4.x deployments, or 3.0.14 for 3.x deployments. Download from official GitHub releases: https://github.com/FirebirdSQL/firebird/releases. Full security advisory at https://github.com/FirebirdSQL/firebird/security/advisories/GHSA-6crx-4g37-7j49. If immediate patching is not feasible, implement network-level access controls as compensating controls: restrict Firebird port access (default TCP 3050) using firewall rules to allow connections only from trusted application servers and administrative workstations, blocking all other inbound traffic. Deploy network intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS) with signatures for malformed Firebird authentication packets or repeated connection attempts followed by crashes. Note that IP-based restrictions reduce but do not eliminate risk if attackers have presence on trusted network segments, and IDS/IPS may introduce latency or false positives for legitimate high-volume database traffic. These mitigations are temporary - prioritize the vendor patch as the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Firebird is an open-source SQL relational database management system used across Linux, Windows, and Unix platforms. The vulnerability resides in the authentication handshake parsing logic, specifically the handling of CNCT_specific_data segments during the initial connection negotiation phase (prior to credential validation). The server's Array class uses a grow() method to dynamically resize buffers based on segment ordering assumptions. When segments arrive out of sequence, an integer underflow occurs: the computed buffer size becomes negative, which is then cast to an unsigned value, resulting in an enormous allocation request or direct memory access violation (SIGSEGV). This is classified as CWE-119 (Improper Restriction on Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer), encompassing both buffer overflows and underflows. The vulnerability affects all Firebird 3.x (before 3.0.14), 4.x (before 4.0.7), and 5.x (before 5.0.4) branches per the CPE data and vendor advisories.

Lifecycle Timeline
3DescriptionCVE.org
Firebird is an open-source relational database management system. In versions prior to 5.0.4, 4.0.7 and 3.0.14,, when processing CNCT_specific_data segments during authentication, the server assumes segments arrive in strictly ascending order. If segments arrive out of order, the Array class's grow() method computes a negative size value, causing a SIGSEGV crash. An unauthenticated attacker who knows only the server's IP and port can exploit this to crash the server. This issue has been fixed in versions 5.0.4, 4.0.7 and 3.0.14.
Executive ViewAI
Firebird database servers versions 3.0.13 and earlier, 4.0.6 and earlier, and 5.0.3 and earlier are vulnerable to unauthenticated remote denial-of-service attacks that crash the server without requiring credentials or authentication. Any organization running affected Firebird instances exposed to untrusted networks faces immediate service disruption risk, as attackers need only knowledge of the server's network location to trigger a crash via malformed connection packets.
Pending vendor patch availability: implement firewall rules to restrict Firebird port access (default 3050/TCP) to known, trusted application and client IP addresses only; deploy intrusion detection/prevention to monitor for malformed authentication packets; isolate Firebird servers on segmented networks to minimize blast radius; maintain verified database backups and documented recovery procedures to minimize downtime from crashes.
