Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target gatekeeper be using H.460.24 NAT traversal and that an H.460.24 probing exchange be in progress; the attacker sends a short application-defined RTCP packet to the media port during that probe, and the pre-fix code copies 20 bytes from offset 12 with no minimum-length check, reading past the heap allocation. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: the attack is network-based and unauthenticated (PR:N) but carries high complexity (AC:H) and a timing/probe precondition (AT:P in CVSS 4.0), so it cannot be triggered against an idle service - a probing session must be active and the packet must reach the correct media port; realistic impact is confined to a possible crash (availability) rather than data disclosure or code execution.

Impact

This is a medium-severity, lower-priority issue rather than an urgent threat. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.3 and shows the two signals that constrain real-world risk: AC:H and AT:P mean exploitation is network-reachable and unauthenticated but depends on specific conditions and timing - the attacker must send the malformed probe to the media port while an H.460.24 probing exchange is actually taking place, not against an idle service. Impact is limited to availability (VA:L only; VC:N, VI:N) - the description's worst case is reading past the heap allocation and 'possibly' crashing the gatekeeper, i.e. a potential denial of service, not reliable data disclosure or code execution. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit was provided, so there is no evidence of active or imminent exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with applying the vendor fix in a normal monthly patch cycle rather than as an emergency. One cross-source tension to verify: the input Tags include 'Information Disclosure', but the authoritative CVSS 4.0 vector sets VC:N (no confidentiality impact), so the practical risk is a crash/DoS, not confirmed data leakage.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can reach a GNU Gatekeeper media port sends a short, malformed application-defined RTCP packet during an H.460.24 NAT-traversal probing exchange. The undersized packet causes ReceivedProbePacket() to read past the end of the heap buffer (the code copied 20 bytes from offset 12 without first checking the frame was at least 32 bytes), potentially crashing the gatekeeper and disrupting VoIP call setup. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the high attack complexity (AC:H) with a timing/probing precondition (AT:P) makes reliable triggering non-trivial.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026

GNU Gatekeeper (gnugk) before 5.16 can be crashed by a deliberately short application-defined RTCP probe packet delivered to the H.460.24 media port, because H46024Socket::ReceivedProbePacket() copies 20 bytes from offset 12 of the frame without first checking that the frame is long enough, producing a heap over-read. Only gatekeepers that have H.460.24 NAT traversal in use and have an H.460.24 probing exchange in progress are reachable by the flaw, so realistic impact is limited to process termination on a network-reachable, unauthenticated but timing-constrained path rather than data disclosure or code execution. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and version 5.16 contains the vendor fix.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to GNU Gatekeeper 5.16 or later, which contains the length check in H46024Socket::ReceivedProbePacket() (release https://github.com/willamowius/gnugk/releases/tag/v5_16, fixing commit https://github.com/willamowius/gnugk/commit/160aa27344ecc9a443cccaa63e8d7fa95a766610); the vendor advisory is at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/gnu-gatekeeper-before-5.16-out-of-bounds-read-in-h-460.24-rtcp-probe-handler. If the upgrade cannot be applied immediately, the interim option is to disable H.460.24 probing/NAT traversal so short RTCP probe frames are no longer parsed on the media path, accepting the trade-off that endpoints behind NAT lose direct media route establishment and fall back to routed media through the gatekeeper, which increases gatekeeper bandwidth load. Because the realistic outcome is a crash of the gatekeeper process, restart supervision and crash-log monitoring on exposed instances provide detection while a patched build is staged.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-125 out-of-bounds read in the H.323 gatekeeper's H.460.24 NAT-traversal support. H.460.24 probing uses application-defined RTCP packets exchanged over the media path to test whether a direct media route between endpoints is possible; the gatekeeper's H46024Socket parses these frames in ReceivedProbePacket() and, in the pre-fix code shown in the upstream commit, unconditionally calls memcpy(bytes.GetPointer(), data+12, 20) to extract the probe's digest field. A frame shorter than 32 bytes therefore causes a read beyond the end of the heap-allocated packet buffer. The upstream fix adds an explicit length gate (if (frame.GetSize() < 32) return false) with a trace message, and the changelog records it as 'better check of H.460.24 probes'. The affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:willamowius:gnugk:* covers every release prior to 5.16. Because the over-read is bounded to a 20-byte copy from attacker-influenced packet memory, the primary consequence is an availability fault; the CVSS 4.0 vector's AC:H and AT:P reflect a high-complexity path with a precondition on the target's state (an active H.460.24 probing exchange), not any attacker-controlled race or timing manipulation.

DescriptionCVE.org

GNU Gatekeeper (gnugk) before 5.16 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in H46024Socket::ReceivedProbePacket() that allows remote attackers to cause a heap over-read by sending short probe packets. Attackers can send a short application-defined RTCP packet to the media port during H.460.24 probing to read past the heap allocation and possibly crash the gatekeeper.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
