Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concrete conditions from the advisory: (1) the targeted Parse class must have an afterSave trigger registered - classes without an afterSave trigger complete the identical request normally and are not affected; (2) that class must contain a pointer field; and (3) the malicious update must use a dot-notation key that targets the pointer field's internal object identifier (e.g. 'owner.id' with an __op Delete or a null value). The request can be made without authentication only when the targeted object is writable without a session; otherwise the attacker needs whatever write access the object's ACL/CLP demands. The requirement for an afterSave trigger on a pointer-bearing, writable class is the main limiting factor restricting which deployments are exploitable.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded denial-of-service issue, not a code-execution or data-exposure threat. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) is consistent with the advisory: network-reachable, low attacker complexity, no privileges required when the targeted object is writable without a session, and impact limited to availability (VA:H) with no confidentiality or integrity effect. The AT:P (attack requirement present) metric is well grounded - exploitation only works against a class that both has an afterSave trigger and contains a pointer field, so the flaw is conditional on application design rather than universal. No EPSS score is provided and the CVE is not on CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), indicating prompt-but-not-crash remediation urgency. The GitHub advisory and the fix PRs include regression tests that reproduce the crash, so the trigger is publicly documented. Weighing these signals together: the real-world risk is a reliable, low-effort, potentially unauthenticated process crash against vulnerable Parse Server deployments that use afterSave triggers on pointer-bearing classes - a meaningful availability risk for exposed instances, but one with no exploitation telemetry and a narrowing configuration precondition. Treat as a real priority for affected deployments rather than a theoretical high-CVSS item.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with the ability to submit an object update (unauthenticated if the target object is writable without a session) sends a single crafted PUT to a class that has an afterSave trigger, using a dot-notation key that targets a pointer field's object identifier (e.g. {"owner.id": {"__op": "Delete"}}). The pointer passed to the trigger loses its identifier and can no longer be serialized, the uncontained error terminates the Node process, and all clients lose service until the server is restarted. The advisory and the fix PRs contain regression tests that reproduce this crash, so the trigger is publicly documented.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026

Denial of service in Parse Server (npm package parse-server) lets a remote client terminate the Node.js process by sending an object update whose dot-notation key targets the object identifier of a pointer field on a class that has an afterSave trigger registered. All clients lose service until the server is restarted. The request is unauthenticated (CVSS PR:N) only when the targeted object is writable without a session; otherwise the attacker needs whatever write access the object's ACL/CLP grants, and classes without an afterSave trigger or without pointer fields complete the identical request normally, which bounds the set of exposed deployments. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; the vendor has released fixes in 8.6.110 and 9.10.6-alpha.2.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to a patched release: Parse Server 8.6.110 for the 8.x line (https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/pull/10803) or 9.10.6-alpha.2 or later for the 9.x line (https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/pull/10802); the vendor states upgrading is the recommended remediation. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the advisory's documented workarounds are: add a beforeSave trigger on affected classes that rejects updates using dot notation to address a pointer field's internal identifier, so the request fails before reaching afterSave (trade-off: added per-write Cloud Code overhead and it must be deployed on every class that has both pointer fields and an afterSave trigger, since a missed class stays exploitable); or remove afterSave triggers from classes that contain pointer fields (trade-off: any post-save side effects those triggers perform - notifications, derived writes, audit logging - stop working). Neither workaround fixes the underlying serialization failure, so the vendor still recommends patching. Track fixes via the GitHub advisory GHSA-wc3c-6843-q7mv.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-248 (Uncaught Exception) reaching a Node.js process from Parse Server's Cloud Code trigger pipeline. Parse Server permits dot-notation update keys such as 'owner.id' (for example with an __op Delete or a null value) to address the internal identifier of a Pointer field. When the server assembles the object it passes to registered beforeSave/afterSave triggers, such a key can strip the pointer of its identifier, leaving an object that can no longer be serialized - the serialization path throws ('Cannot create a pointer to an unsaved ParseObject' in the vendor's own test fixture) and the resulting error is not contained. Because the rejection is unhandled, it terminates the Node process rather than returning an error to the caller, so the impact is availability only (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) and nothing is disclosed or modified. The upstream fixes address both halves of the problem: the object built for triggers no longer loses a pointer's identifier when a dot-notation key is applied (PR 10802 for the 9.x line, PR 10803 for the 8.x line), and trigger-logging serialization was made resilient via a safeToJSON helper that returns undefined instead of throwing, so a serialization failure can no longer leave a request unresolved or kill the process. The vendor's regression tests use an unhandledRejection listener plus a request timeout to prove the request now completes with HTTP 200 and the pointer keeps its id; several of those pointer-id cases are scoped to MongoDB, and the sources do not state a per-datastore confirmation for other storage adapters.

DescriptionCVE.org

Parse Server before 8.6.110 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.6-alpha.2 fails to contain a serialization error when an object update uses a dot notation key targeting a pointer field's object identifier on a class with an afterSave trigger. Attackers, including unauthenticated clients when objects are writable without a session, can send such an update to crash the Node process.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-121414 is a high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability in Parse Server that allows unauthenticated attackers to crash the Node.js process, causing all clients to lose service until manual restart. While no public exploit is currently known, the potential for operational disruption and reputational harm makes this a priority for teams relying on Parse Server for critical applications. Leadership should ensure timely patching to prevent service outages.
