1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires two concrete prerequisites. First, the deployment must restrict the create class-level permission of the _Session class - the advisory states plainly that 'Only deployments that restrict the create class-level permission of the _Session class are affected', so default installations without this restriction are not exploitable. Second, the attacker must already possess a valid, already-revocable session token for a user (reflected by PR:L); the endpoint is reached via a REST API POST to /upgradeToRevocableSession (any letter case, with or without trailing slash, including inside batch requests). Limiting factors: the attacker gains no new privileges or data, only additional persistent sessions for an account they can already access; class-level permissions and Cloud Code triggers cannot block this, so the only complete fix is upgrading, with the documented workaround being to block client requests to the /upgradeToRevocableSession path upstream for clients that do not need legacy-token upgrade. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N) and the 2.3 base score describe a network-reachable flaw that requires the attacker to already hold a valid user session token (PR:L) and only affects a narrow deployment mode, with impact limited to integrity (VI:L) and no confidentiality or availability effect - matching CWE-863 (incorrect authorization). The vuln.today decision label is 'monitor', the lowest urgency tier, and there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score in the supplied data, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from this input. No public exploit reference is labeled in the input (only the vendor advisory and the two fix PRs, which include regression tests), so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The 'AT:P' attack requirement and the advisory's explicit scoping - 'Only deployments that restrict the create class-level permission of the _Session class are affected' - mean most default Parse Server installations are not affected at all. The practical impact is session persistence/proliferation (sessions that survive logout), not account takeover or data disclosure. Net: a real but minor hardening-grade defect, not an emergency; EPSS and KEV data are absent, which is expected for a low-severity flaw rather than a data gap that hides risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained a legitimate user's already-revocable session token (for example a stolen or leaked token) sends it to the /upgradeToRevocableSession endpoint and receives a brand-new session with a fresh expiration, optionally bound to an installation ID of their choosing. Because the new session is not tied to the original, it continues to work even after the victim logs the original session out, giving the attacker durable access. This only works against deployments that restrict the _Session class create class-level permission; no public exploit code is identified in the supplied data, though the vendor PRs include demonstrating regression tests. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Parse Server's POST /upgradeToRevocableSession endpoint will mint a fresh session for any valid session token - including one that is already revocable - because it does not enforce the create class-level permission on the _Session class, so a holder of a user's session token can obtain extra sessions with new expiration dates that remain valid after the original session is logged out. The attacker gains no new privileges or data, only persistence for an account they can already access, and only deployments that restrict the _Session create CLP are affected, per the advisory. Vendor fixes are released in 8.6.112 and 9.10.6-alpha.4; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Parse Server to 8.6.112 (8.x) or 9.10.6-alpha.4 (9.x), which change /upgradeToRevocableSession to upgrade only legacy session tokens and otherwise return the caller's existing session (see PR 10808 and PR 10809, indexed from https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/security/advisories/GHSA-2j2x-c587-q33g). If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the advisory's documented workaround is to block client requests to the session upgrade endpoint before they reach Parse Server - REST API POSTs to the /upgradeToRevocableSession path in any letter case, with or without a trailing slash, including as part of /batch requests - which stops the bypass but causes clients that call the endpoint with an already revocable token (for example the JavaScript SDK when enabling revocable sessions) to receive an error, so it is only suitable where clients do not need to upgrade legacy session tokens. Class-level permissions and Cloud Code triggers cannot prevent this issue, and the vendor states that upgrading is the only complete fix; the public write-up is at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/parse-server-before-8.6.112-and-9.0.0-before-9.10.6-alpha.4-session-permission-bypass-via-upgradetorevocablesession.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is an incorrect-authorization flaw (CWE-863) in the Parse Server Node.js package (CPE cpe:2.3:a:parse-community:parse-server), specifically in the legacy session upgrade path handled by SessionsRouter. /upgradeToRevocableSession exists to convert pre-revocable legacy session tokens into revocable ones, but before the fix the handler created a new _Session row for any token that authenticated, without checking whether the presented token actually was legacy (non-revocable) or whether the _Session class-level create permission allowed it. The fix adds an isLegacySession flag set by getAuthForLegacySessionToken in Auth.js and makes SessionsRouter return the caller's existing session via handleMe when the token is already revocable, so no new row is written. The trigger requires a REST API POST to /upgradeToRevocableSession (the path is matched case-insensitively, with or without a trailing slash, and can be reached inside /batch requests) and, per the advisory, only affects deployments that restrict the create class-level permission of the _Session class; the attacker must already hold a valid, already-revocable session token. Class-level permissions and Cloud Code triggers cannot block this behavior, which is why the vendor's only complete remediation is upgrading.

DescriptionCVE.org
Parse Server before 8.6.112 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.6-alpha.4 contains an authorization bypass in the session upgrade endpoint, which creates a new session for any valid session token without enforcing the _Session class create class-level permission. Attackers holding a user's session token can send an already revocable token to /upgradeToRevocableSession to obtain additional sessions with fresh expiration that persist after the original session is logged out.
