Exploitation Conditions

Requires pre-existing code execution as the specific unprivileged 'pihole' service account (which owns the 0755, non-sticky /etc/pihole directory) - obtained via a compromised pihole account or the separately-reported config→exec bugs; no Linux capability is needed. Affected versions are Core 6.4.2 up to (not including) 6.5. Exploitation relies on the root-run advanced/Scripts/updatecheck.sh updatechecker cron (daily and @reboot, default) performing truncate -s 0, chmod 644, and append on the fixed path /etc/pihole/versions without O_NOFOLLOW/--no-dereference. The deterministic primitives (truncating or creating an arbitrary root-owned file) need no race; the non-destructive disclosure variant (chmod 644 on the real target while truncate hits a decoy) requires winning a fork/exec timing race, which the reporter states succeeds reliably. fs.protected_symlinks does NOT mitigate this because /etc/pihole is not a world-writable sticky directory. LIMITING FACTORS: local access only, the specific pihole account, and dependence on the root cron running; the only complete fix is updating to 6.5.

Impact

This is a genuine local privilege-escalation primitive, but its real-world urgency is gated by a meaningful precondition rather than being mass-exploitable. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U, C:H/I:H/A:H = 7.8 HIGH) correctly reflects local access requiring existing low privileges specifically as the 'pihole' service account - not any local user and not a remote attacker. No CISA KEV entry is present in the input, so this is not confirmed actively exploited; EPSS was not provided, so exploitation-probability cannot be weighed. However, a detailed, working proof-of-concept - including shell steps and a Python inotify-based symlink-race script the reporter states succeeded in 100% of tests - is published directly in the official GHSA-xch2-4qxw-g5vj advisory and the fixing commit, so publicly available exploit code exists. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a patch-this-cycle priority rather than an emergency: the deterministic truncate/create-arbitrary-root-file primitive needs no race (AC:L), while the cleanest confidentiality outcome (making /etc/shadow world-readable without destroying it) requires winning a fork/exec race the reporter characterizes as trivially winnable. Note the single input Tag 'Information Disclosure' understates the issue: the primary impacts are integrity and availability (arbitrary root-owned file truncation/creation) with disclosure as one race-dependent outcome. Bottom line: a real priority for any multi-tenant or shared Pi-hole host where the pihole account could be compromised (e.g. via the separately-reported config→exec bugs), but the local + specific-account requirement keeps it below internet-facing critical issues.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who already has code execution as the unprivileged 'pihole' user (owning the non-sticky 0755 /etc/pihole directory) deletes /etc/pihole/versions and replaces it with a symlink pointing at a sensitive root-owned file such as /etc/shadow. When the root-run updatechecker cron fires (daily/@reboot, default), its truncate/chmod/append operations follow the symlink and act on the target; by racing the symlink swap so truncate lands on a decoy but chmod 644 lands on /etc/shadow, the attacker exposes the hashes for offline cracking and root escalation. A full working PoC, including the race script, is published in the GHSA advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Local privilege escalation in Pi-hole Core 6.4.2 through 6.4.3 lets code running as the unprivileged 'pihole' service account abuse the root-run updatechecker cron to truncate, create, or expose arbitrary root-owned files - including /etc/shadow, sudoers or SSH private keys - because the script rewrites /etc/pihole/versions with truncate -s 0 and chmod 644 while following symbolic links in a directory that account owns. The truncate and create primitives are deterministic, while the non-destructive disclosure variant (chmod 644 landing on the real target while truncate hits a decoy) is a fork/exec race the reporter states is won reliably. Access is local and gated by prior code execution as the specific pihole account, obtained via a compromised pihole account or the separately reported config-to-exec bugs, and no Linux capability is required. A public proof-of-concept is published in the upstream advisory; it has not been independently verified as working exploit code and no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation is reported.

RemediationAI

Update Pi-hole Core to version 6.5 or later, which is the only complete fix; the release at https://github.com/pi-hole/pi-hole/releases/tag/v6.5 contains the corrected updatechecker and prestart template, and the underlying changes are visible in pull request https://github.com/pi-hole/pi-hole/pull/6719 and commits 85de82dd2b63bf71ecb936177dfb82421d9d2f25, c1062f43b0de1876321bafac58fba862406366cb and e05dc3f139206fd8d0e4a052dceefb9056533517. After upgrading, verify that advanced/Scripts/updatecheck.sh publishes /etc/pihole/versions through an atomic rename rather than truncate/chmod on the fixed path, and that the FTL prestart step performs its touch/chmod as the pihole user rather than as root. Because exploitation requires pre-existing code execution as the pihole account, interim exposure reduction on systems that cannot be patched immediately means eliminating that foothold and removing the trigger path: do not leave credentials or web/admin interfaces that yield shell access as pihole, and, if the primitive must be removed before upgrading, disable or remove the pihole updatechecker root cron entries (both the daily and @reboot entries), accepting that automatic Pi-hole update notifications stop until version 6.5 is installed. Note that fs.protected_symlinks does not mitigate this issue, since /etc/pihole is a non-sticky, non-world-writable directory, and that the chmod-only disclosure variant additionally requires winning the script's fork/exec timing race.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Pi-hole's advanced/Scripts/updatechecker runs from the daily and @reboot root cron and writes version metadata to the fixed path /etc/pihole/versions. From Core 6.4.2 (commit ac370146) the script stopped unlinking and recreating that file and instead issued 'truncate -s 0', 'chmod 644' and shell append ('echo >>') calls against it, none of which use O_NOFOLLOW or --no-dereference. Because /etc/pihole is a non-sticky 0755 directory owned by the unprivileged pihole user, unlink and create operations there are governed by directory ownership rather than by the file's owner, so that user can delete 'versions' and substitute a symlink to any root-owned path; root's subsequent truncate/chmod/append dereference the link and act on the target. This is CWE-59 (link following) with the CWE-61 symlink-following variant; the kernel's fs.protected_symlinks sysctl does not help, as it only restrains symlink traversal inside world-writable sticky directories such as /tmp, and /etc/pihole is neither. The attacker cannot write arbitrary content through the view of the file that the script produces, only truncate it, create a missing target as a root-owned file, or loosen its mode; because the shell script forks and execs several times between the truncate and the chmod, the two operations can be made to land on different paths, which is what enables a non-destructive chmod 644 of a sensitive file. The upstream fix in 6.5 publishes the assembled file via 'mv' so that rename(2) atomically replaces the directory entry rather than following a planted link, and replaces the root-context chmod in the FTL prestart template with an 'su' to the pihole user so a planted symlink to a root-only file simply fails with EPERM.

DescriptionCVE.org

Pi-hole is a DNS sinkhole that protects devices from unwanted content without installing any client-side software. From 6.4.2 until 6.5, the root-run advanced/Scripts/updatecheck.sh cron job applies truncate -s 0 and chmod 644 to /etc/pihole/versions while following symbolic links in a directory owned by the pihole user. An attacker executing as pihole can replace that path with a symlink so the scheduled root operations truncate or create an arbitrary root-owned file, or race the operations so chmod makes a sensitive target world-readable without truncating it. This issue is fixed in version 6.5.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity local privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2026-119336) in Pi-hole Core versions 6.4.2 and 6.4.3 allows an attacker with access to the unprivileged 'pihole' service account to gain root-level control over affected systems. This puts sensitive data such as /etc/shadow, sudoers, and SSH private keys at risk, potentially leading to full network compromise and data breaches. Leadership must prioritize remediation because Pi-hole is often deployed as critical network infrastructure and this flaw directly undermines system integrity and confidentiality.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict access to the 'pihole' account to only essential personnel; monitor for suspicious local activity; consider temporarily disabling the updatechecker cron job if operationally acceptable; ensure all known code execution vectors are patched.
