Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a victim to open or process an attacker-supplied, specially crafted H.265 bitstream that contains a Screen Content Coding (SCC) extension with palette predictor initializer settings that trigger the integer underflow in the upper-bound computation for the number of palette predictor entries, using an application that relies on GStreamer's gst-plugins-bad H.265 parser. Limiting factors: exploitation is not fully automatic - UI:R means the user must actively open/play the malicious media; the affected gst-plugins-bad H.265 parser must be present and invoked to handle the file; and impact is bounded to a crash (denial of service) with no confidentiality or integrity effect per the vendor description.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity, DoS-only issue that should be patched on a routine cycle rather than treated as an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 6.5) tells a consistent story: network-reachable in the sense that a malicious file can be delivered remotely, low complexity, no privileges required, but user interaction (UI:R) is mandatory because a victim must open or process the crafted H.265 media, and the only impact is availability (application crash) - no confidentiality or integrity loss. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', not act_now or emergency, which aligns with a memory-corruption bug whose realistic outcome is limited to a crash. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified here. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; the only code reference is the upstream fix (GStreamer merge request 10902), not a weaponized PoC. CWE-122 (heap-based buffer overflow) can in principle imply code-execution potential, but Red Hat's description explicitly scopes the impact to denial-of-service, so the A:H-only rating should be respected rather than inflated. Net: real but non-urgent - a legitimate this-month patch item, not a high-CVSS-but-hollow finding, yet also not a drop-everything priority given DoS-only impact and required user interaction.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts an H.265 video file whose Screen Content Coding (SCC) extension carries palette predictor initializer settings that trigger an integer underflow in the parser's upper-bound check. The attacker distributes this file (email attachment, web download, media share) to a victim running an application built on GStreamer's gst-plugins-bad H.265 parser; when the victim opens or previews it, the parser writes past a fixed-size array and the application crashes. No public exploit code has been identified, and the outcome is limited to denial of service.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Heap-based memory corruption in GStreamer's gst-plugins-bad H.265 parser allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash applications that decode attacker-supplied HEVC media, giving a denial-of-service impact only with no confidentiality or integrity effect. The victim must actively open or play the crafted bitstream (CVSS UI:R), and the flaw is limited to a fixed-size array overrun triggered when the parser mishandles Screen Content Coding palette predictor initializer values. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is rated moderate for routine patching rather than emergency response.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (GitLab merge request 10902); a released patched version is not independently confirmed in the provided data, so validate the package version against the GStreamer security advisory sa-2026-0012 and the Red Hat CVE page before closing. On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, 8, 9 and 10, apply the updated gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free packages once the corresponding RHSA errata is published, and rebuild or restart dependent media services so the new library is loaded. Where patching must wait, reduce exposure by preventing untrusted H.265 input from reaching the gst-plugins-bad parser - for example removing or not installing the bad-plugins package on servers that do not require HEVC decoding, or restricting upload/playback of external media to trusted sources - at the cost of losing H.265 playback and transcoding capability in those environments. Because the assessed impact is crash-only denial of service with no confidentiality or integrity effect, remediation can follow a routine patch cycle rather than emergency change control.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected component is the H.265 (HEVC) parser shipped in GStreamer's gst-plugins-bad module, which large distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, 8, 9 and 10 package for media playback and transcoding pipelines (the supplied CPE entries list the RHEL branches, not a standalone GStreamer product). The root cause is classed as CWE-122, a heap-based buffer overflow: when the parser processes a Screen Content Coding (SCC) extension, an integer underflow in the computation of the upper bound for the number of palette predictor entries allows an out-of-range count to be accepted, and the parser then writes past the end of a fixed-size array allocated on the heap. The result is memory corruption that in practice manifests as an application crash rather than controlled code execution. The trigger is a malformed H.265 bitstream delivered as a media file; the parser must be present and actually invoked on the file, so exposure depends on whether the target application's decode path uses the gst-plugins-bad HEVC parser. No exploit code or proof-of-concept is referenced in the available intelligence.

DescriptionNVD

A flaw was found in GStreamer's gst-plugins-bad H.265 video parser. When parsing a specially crafted H.265 bitstream containing a Screen Content Coding (SCC) extension with certain palette predictor initializer settings, an integer underflow in the upper-bound computation allows the parser to accept an out-of-range value for the number of palette predictor entries. This causes the parser to write beyond the end of a fixed-size array, resulting in memory corruption and an application crash. Successful exploitation requires an attacker to provide a malformed H.265 media file to a vulnerable application, and is limited to a denial-of-service impact.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.
