2 techniques across 1 tactic: Execution

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must be able to call PATCH /api/execution-workspaces/:id and store a cleanupCommand (or teardownCommand) value, then cause the target workspace to be archived so cleanupExecutionWorkspaceArtifacts executes it via child_process.spawn(shell,['-c',command]) with no validation, allowlisting, or escaping. In the default desktop 'local_trusted' mode this needs NO authentication - any local process or malicious web page hitting 127.0.0.1:3100 is auto-granted instance-admin and the boardMutationGuard is bypassed; in 'authenticated' mode any user with company access can do it because the company-access check runs after the DB query (BOLA/IDOR). Limiting factors: the attacker must reach the API endpoint and trigger an archive, and a shell must be present - native on Linux/macOS (/bin/sh), and on Windows via sh.exe from Git for Windows, which Paperclip requires and is therefore present on most installs.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated-CVSS artifact. The signals are largely consistent: CVSS 4.0 base 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N, full VC/VI/VA:H) describes a low-complexity, network-reachable command-injection RCE, and that mechanism is corroborated by the GHSA advisory, the VulnCheck advisory, the vulnerable source file, and a published PoC script that demonstrated three independent RCE proofs on Windows 11 (file write, systeminfo exfiltration, calc.exe launch). The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week', which supports prompt but not emergency remediation. Two caveats must be stated explicitly: (1) EPSS is not provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified here; (2) the CVSS PR:L assumes an authenticated/key-holding actor, but the advisory documents that in the default desktop 'local_trusted' mode every request is auto-granted instance-admin with ZERO authentication - meaning real-world privilege requirements are effectively PR:N for default desktop installs and PR:L (any company user, via a BOLA/IDOR-style post-query access check) for authenticated team deployments. This is not in CISA KEV, so there is no confirmed active exploitation; the elevated risk comes from working public exploit code plus trivial exploitability, not observed in-the-wild use.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-complexity actor reaches the Paperclip workspace API (for a default desktop install, any local process or a malicious web page making requests to 127.0.0.1:3100 with no authentication; for a team deployment, any user with company access) and issues PATCH /api/execution-workspaces/:id to store an attacker-chosen cleanupCommand, then archives the workspace so cleanupExecutionWorkspaceArtifacts runs it through a shell as the server process. A published, automated PoC exploit script (poc_paperclip_rce.py) exists and demonstrated three independent RCE proofs on Windows 11, so weaponization requires no novel research. Because the command runs with the server process's privileges, the attacker can exfiltrate system data, pivot, or backdoor the source repositories the server manages.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Remote code execution in Paperclip AI server versions 2026.403.0 through 2026.416.0: an attacker who can call PATCH /api/execution-workspaces/:id can store an arbitrary cleanupCommand (or teardownCommand), which the server later runs through a shell as the Paperclip process when the workspace is archived. The CVSS 4.0 vector rates it 8.7 with PR:L, but the practical bar is far lower on default desktop installs - in local_trusted mode every request to 127.0.0.1:3100 is auto-granted instance-admin with no authentication and the board-mutation guard is bypassed, while in authenticated mode any user with company access qualifies because the company-access check runs after the database query. This is a genuine high-priority issue rather than an inflated-CVSS artifact; the vendor advisory ships a public proof-of-concept script (file write, systeminfo exfiltration, calc.exe launch on Windows 11), though this analysis has not independently verified that script as working exploit code, and there is no CISA KEV entry indicating confirmed active exploitation.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Paperclip 2026.416.0 (npm @paperclipai/server 2026.416.0), which is the first fixed release; the corresponding fix commit is 32a9165ddf6308f3b46eae0653b6f583e502e538 and the advisory is at https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/security/advisories/GHSA-vr7g-88fq-vhq3. Because exploitation only needs the ability to reach the PATCH endpoint and archive a workspace, treating exposure as urgent for any instance reachable beyond loopback is warranted, and desktop installs running in local_trusted mode should be upgraded promptly since browser- or process-originated requests to 127.0.0.1:3100 need no credentials. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the advisory's compensating measures are: reject or sanitize user-supplied cleanupCommand/teardownCommand values in the PATCH handler (removes the legitimate custom-cleanup feature for those tenants); allowlist only expected commands such as git clean or a scoped rm -rf on the workspace directory (breaks any custom teardown scripting); replace spawn(shell, ["-c", command]) with execFile() using an argument array so shell metacharacters are never interpreted (side effect: existing commands relying on pipes or redirection stop working); add an authorization check before the PATCH is processed and stop the same endpoint from updating both workspace status and security-sensitive command fields; run cleanup commands in a sandboxed, low-privilege container or VM; and log all modifications to command fields for forensics. The deeper hardening items - sandboxing and a codebase-wide audit of spawn/exec/execFile call sites - are longer-term and should not substitute for the version upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is CWE-78 OS command injection in Paperclip's execution-workspace lifecycle. The PATCH handler in server/src/routes/execution-workspaces.ts accepts a free-form config object and persists cleanupCommand/teardownCommand into workspace metadata with no validation, allowlisting, or escaping. When the workspace status is set to archived, cleanupExecutionWorkspaceArtifacts() in server/src/services/workspace-runtime.ts passes each stored command to recordWorkspaceCommandOperation(), which resolves the shell via resolveShell() (process.env.SHELL, falling back to "sh") and calls child_process.spawn(shell, ["-c", command]) - so shell metacharacters in the stored value are interpreted by the OS shell rather than treated as inert arguments. The trigger path is therefore two ordinary API calls: store the command, then archive. Shell availability shapes platform exposure: /bin/sh is native on Linux and macOS, while Windows relies on sh.exe shipped with Git for Windows, which Paperclip requires and which the advisory says is present on most installs. The npm artefact is @paperclipai/server (CPE cpe:2.3:a:paperclipai:@paperclipai/server), and the advisory notes the authorization weakness is compounded by an assertCompanyAccess check that executes after the database lookup (BOLA/IDOR pattern).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A remote code execution vulnerability in Paperclip AI server versions 2026.403.0 through 2026.416.0 allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the host when a workspace is archived. This affects organizations running these versions, particularly those with default local_trusted deployments where no authentication is required, and could lead to full system compromise. Leadership should prioritize patching given the availability of a public proof-of-concept and the potential for significant operational disruption.
