Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must already have a shell or account inside a Bastille jail (PR:L) with write access to the jail filesystem so they can plant symlinks pointing outside the jail root. Exploitation additionally depends on a host administrator subsequently invoking the cp.sh, rcp.sh or jcp.sh subcommand against the affected jail (UI:P) - the root-privileged copy only follows the planted symlink when that operator action occurs, so the flaw cannot be triggered by the jailed user alone. It is not remotely reachable (AV:L) and is limited to Bastille versions through 1.4.4; the only complete fix stated by the evidence is the vendor patch that resolves symlinks and refuses copies resolving outside the jail root.

Impact

This is a medium-severity local privilege/isolation flaw, not a remote emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) shows the attacker must already hold a foothold inside a Bastille jail (PR:L) and cannot act alone: UI:P means exploitation is gated on a host administrator later running the cp/rcp/jcp subcommand, which is the real-world throttle on this bug. Impact is meaningful once triggered - integrity and availability are high (VI:H/VA:H: root-run copies overwrite host files) with lower confidentiality (VC:L: reading host files), amounting to a jail-escape primitive. Decision signals are consistent and point to measured urgency, not panic: the vuln.today priority is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), there is no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS score was provided, and no confirmed working exploit was supplied - only a VulnCheck advisory and a GitHub issue reference. The main caveat is that the supplied CVSS 4.0 vector sets subsequent-system metrics to none (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) even though the described effect is precisely a jail-to-host escape; a jail escape arguably crosses a security boundary, so the host impact may be understated relative to a strict scope/subsequent-system reading. Net: a genuine issue worth patching on a normal cycle, but its need for an existing jail account plus an administrator-initiated copy keeps real-world risk below what the 'jail escape as root' phrasing might suggest.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A user confined to a Bastille jail writes a symlink inside the jail filesystem pointing at a host path or another jail's root. When the host administrator subsequently runs 'bastille cp', 'bastille rcp', or 'bastille jcp' involving that jail, the root-privileged copy follows the symlink and reads or overwrites files outside the jail root. No confirmed working exploit was supplied; a VulnCheck advisory and a GitHub issue (#1673) describe the flaw.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Jailed users on Bastille through 1.4.4 can plant symlinks inside their own jail so that administrator-run cp.sh, rcp.sh or jcp.sh copies follow those links and read or overwrite host files with root privileges, breaking jail isolation. Exploitation is not remote: it requires an account with write access inside a jail plus a host administrator later running one of the affected subcommands against that jail, which places the flaw at medium severity rather than an emergency. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis; the vendor has published an upstream fix that resolves paths before copying.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor fix, which is the upstream commit accc246ba92602c355afc66d0d8b9d43277532e1 at https://github.com/BastilleBSD/bastille/commit/accc246ba92602c355afc66d0d8b9d43277532e1; it canonicalises the jail root and the source/destination paths with realpath() and aborts with a 'possible symlink escape' error whenever a copy would resolve outside the source or destination jail root. Because the references give a commit rather than a tagged release number, confirm with the vendor or the project issue https://github.com/BastilleBSD/bastille/issues/1673 that the Bastille build in use actually contains this commit rather than assuming a version bump alone; the fix is the only complete remedy stated by the evidence. Until it is in place, do not run cp.sh, rcp.sh or jcp.sh against jails whose contents are controlled by untrusted users, and treat the root account inside any Bastille jail as able to reach host paths through planted symlinks - restricting who holds root inside jails limits exposure but does not remove the flaw, and operators who continue using these subcommands against untrusted jails should verify the jail filesystem for symlinks resolving outside the jail root before each copy.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Bastille is a FreeBSD jail management framework whose subcommands are shell scripts under /usr/local/share/bastille/, with each jail's filesystem rooted at ${bastille_jailsdir}/${jail}/root. The cp.sh, rcp.sh and jcp.sh scripts perform host-privileged file operations into or out of those jail trees, and before the fix they composed target paths from user-supplied arguments without canonicalising them. Because a jail's root directory is untrusted from the host's perspective, a symlink created inside the jail can redirect the root-run copy to an arbitrary host path or into a second, unrelated jail - the classic CWE-59 link-following pattern, here yielding jail escape, host file disclosure and host file overwrite. The upstream commit accc246ba92602c355afc66d0d8b9d43277532e1 addresses the root cause by calling realpath() on the jail root and on the source/destination paths and then refusing any operation whose resolved path does not fall under the expected jail root, aborting with an explicit 'possible symlink escape' error. The assessed vector (AV:L/PR:L/UI:R, S:C with high integrity and availability impact) reflects that the jailed attacker cannot trigger the flaw alone: the escape only materialises when an operator invokes the vulnerable subcommand.

DescriptionCVE.org

Bastille through 1.4.4 contains a symlink following vulnerability in the cp.sh, rcp.sh and jcp.sh subcommands that allows jailed users to escape jail isolation. Attackers inside a jail can plant symlinks pointing to host paths or other jail roots, so administrator-run copies overwrite or read host files with root privileges.
