Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a precise combination: (1) a host actually using LibreSSL's ocspcheck utility (not merely linking libtls/libssl), (2) an OCSP responder URL that uses the https scheme but a TCP port other than 443 - this is the trigger, because url2host() discards the scheme and http_alloc() only enables TLS when port==443, so such requests go out as cleartext HTTP, and (3) an attacker with an on-path (man-in-the-middle/passive-tap) network position to read the traffic. Limiting factors: the https-on-non-443-port OCSP configuration is non-default and uncommon, the attacker cannot inject or modify (read-only metadata exposure), and only OCSP request fields (serial numbers, issuer hashes, nonces) leak - no credentials or key material. These constraints are reflected in the supplied AC:H and AT:P metrics.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-urgency information-disclosure issue, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores 6.3 (medium) and correctly reflects a flaw that is network-reachable but gated by both high attack complexity (AC:H) and a specific attack requirement (AT:P): the attacker must occupy an on-path position AND the victim's ocspcheck invocation must target an https OCSP responder URL on a non-443 port - the exact condition under which url2host() discards the scheme and http_alloc() fails to select TLS. Confidentiality impact is low (VC:L) and there is no integrity or availability impact (VI:N/VA:N), because only OCSP request metadata - certificate serial numbers, issuer name hashes, and nonces - leaks, not private keys or credentials. No EPSS score was supplied, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input. KEV status is not listed (treat as not present): there is no confirmed active exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', which aligns with a patch-available, medium-severity, narrowly-conditioned bug rather than an emergency. Net: real and worth patching on a routine cycle, but the narrow trigger conditions and on-path requirement keep real-world risk well below the raw CVSS number's first impression.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker already positioned on the network path (e.g., a malicious Wi-Fi gateway, compromised router, or ISP-level interceptor) waits for a host running LibreSSL ocspcheck to validate a certificate whose OCSP responder URL uses the https scheme on a non-443 port. Because ocspcheck sends the request in cleartext over plain HTTP in that case, the attacker passively reads the OCSP request and harvests the certificate serial number, issuer name hash, and nonce. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the high attack complexity plus required on-path position make this an opportunistic metadata-disclosure rather than a reliable remote compromise.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

LibreSSL's ocspcheck utility (through 4.4.0) can transmit OCSP requests in cleartext when an OCSP responder URL uses the https scheme on a TCP port other than 443: url2host() discards the URL scheme and http_alloc() decides TLS solely on whether the port equals 443. An on-path attacker in a position to read the traffic can then observe the leaked OCSP request metadata - certificate serial numbers, issuer hashes and nonces - but cannot modify it. Exposure requires a non-default configuration (https responder URL on a non-443 port) and a passive network position, so severity is limited to low-confidentiality metadata disclosure; exploit code is not confirmed, and the issue is not listed as actively exploited.

RemediationAI

Update to a LibreSSL build that contains the upstream fix commit 0f7039667044d1cd252cc72134e499186da4da25 (https://github.com/openbsd/src/commit/0f7039667044d1cd252cc72134e499186da4da25), which passes an explicit use_tls flag from url2host() through http_get() to http_alloc() so TLS is selected from the URL scheme instead of the hard-coded port == 443 test; patch availability is confirmed by the vendor/patch reference, and patches should be tracked through the LibreSSL portable repository (https://github.com/libressl/portable) and the OpenBSD source tree. Where updating cannot be done immediately, the practical compensating control is to configure OCSP responder URLs that use https only on port 443 (or use http knowingly), since the cleartext transmission occurs only for https URLs on non-443 ports; this avoids the leak at the cost of depending on the responder's 443 endpoint, and restricting ocspcheck execution to trusted network paths reduces on-path exposure but does not fix the underlying flaw. Because the leaked data is limited to OCSP request metadata (serial numbers, issuer hashes, nonces) and no injection is possible, urgency is moderate; the vendor advisory is at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/libressl-ocspcheck-through-4.4.0-cleartext-transmission-of-ocsp-requests-via-url2host and the ENISA EUVD entry is EUVD-2026-111549.

Technical ContextAI · show details

LibreSSL is OpenBSD's fork of OpenSSL, and ocspcheck is the bundled utility that validates OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) revocation responses, optionally with nonces for replay protection. The defect is a CWE-319 cleartext transmission flaw rooted in how the URL is parsed: url2host() extracts the host, port and path but drops the scheme entirely, and http_alloc() in usr.sbin/ocspcheck/http.c previously enabled TLS only under the hard-coded condition port == 443. Consequently any https OCSP responder URL that specifies a different port is contacted over plain HTTP, exposing request contents (serial numbers, issuer name hashes, nonces) to on-path observers. The upstream fix threads a new use_tls flag through url2host(), http_alloc(), http_get() and their header prototypes, replacing the port comparison with a scheme-derived decision, so the transport now follows the URL scheme rather than the port number. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:openbsd:libressl:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and EUVD's range of LibreSSL 0 through 4.4.0 reflect that the code has behaved this way across releases; note the flaw is specific to the ocspcheck tool and does not affect programs that merely link libtls or libssl.

DescriptionCVE.org

LibreSSL ocspcheck through 4.4.0 contains a cleartext transmission vulnerability because url2host() discards the OCSP URL scheme and http_alloc() only selects TLS for port 443. On-path network attackers can read OCSP requests sent to https responder URLs on non-443 ports, exposing certificate serial numbers, issuer hashes, and nonces.
