Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a UDM instance explicitly configured with home-network (hnet) de-conceal private keys - without these keys the vulnerable parse_scheme_output() SUCI de-concealment path is not reached, which is the reason for the AC:H rating. Given that configuration, a remote unauthenticated UE or SBI peer must submit a crafted SUCI whose scheme-output hits the minimum accepted length (42 bytes) to the UDM. Limiting factors: the non-default de-conceal-key configuration, the high crafting precision (AT:P / AC:H), affected versions limited to Open5GS 2.6.1 through 2.8.0, and the fact that the over-read is only 3-4 bytes, read-only, silent under talloc, and never placed on the wire - so there is no attacker-observable disclosure and no crash in practice.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite the medium 6.3 CVSS 4.0 base score, and the signals are largely consistent on that point. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) shows a network-reachable, unauthenticated flaw but with high attack complexity and a present attack requirement, and only low confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability impact. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV listing are provided in the input, and the GHSA advisory itself classifies this as a 'low-severity hardening issue, read-only and config-gated.' The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (routine patching), not act_now or emergency. Critically, the advisory states the over-read bytes are only 3-4 bytes past the allocation and are never placed on the wire and the operation is silent under talloc - so even the VC:L confidentiality rating overstates practical impact, because the attacker gains nothing observable. The one limiting factor that most reduces real-world exposure is that the code path is config-gated: it is only reachable when a UDM is configured with home-network (hnet) de-conceal private keys, which is why the advisory assigns AC:H. Net: a real, confirmed bug worth patching on a normal cycle, but not an urgent or high-impact threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a 5G core where the UDM is configured with hnet home-network de-conceal private keys, a remote unauthenticated UE or SBI peer sends a crafted SUCI whose scheme-output is the minimum accepted 42-byte length to the UDM's SUCI de-concealment path. The incomplete length check in parse_scheme_output() (which omits OGS_MSIN_LEN) causes a heap over-read of 3-4 bytes past the allocated buffer during the MAC-tag memcpy. A private proof-of-concept exists (the reporter offers it on request and demonstrated the over-read under an ASan build); no public exploit code is available, and because the over-read bytes are not returned to the attacker, the scenario yields no data disclosure or crash in practice.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026

An out-of-bounds heap read in Open5GS 2.6.1 through 2.8.0 sits in the SBI SUCI de-concealment helper parse_scheme_output() (lib/sbi/conv.c), where the length guard omits the 5-byte MSIN component and lets a 42-byte scheme output be processed with only a 41-byte bound. A remote unauthenticated UE or SBI peer can deliver a crafted SUCI to a UDM that has home-network de-conceal private keys configured, causing a 3-4 byte over-read at the cipher-text and MAC-tag copy; the read data is never placed on the wire and the operation is silent under talloc, so there is no attacker-observable disclosure and no practical crash. Exploitation is config-gated and requires high crafting precision (AC:H/AT:P), no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the reporter holds a PoC privately on request; the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, consistent with the medium 6.3 CVSS 4.0 base score but a low practical priority.

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix, commit fdddcd5e3359703f0a945b308e64494a18a534f1 (referenced from advisory https://github.com/open5gs/open5gs/security/advisories/GHSA-vp5f-rg8g-8p7j), which converts scheme_output_size to size_t and requires scheme_output_size >= ecckey->size + cipher_text->size + OGS_MACTAG_LEN, effectively folding OGS_MSIN_LEN into the guard; no tagged release version is listed as fixed in the available data, so build from the patched commit and confirm with the vendor before relying on a packaged release. Because the vulnerable path is reached only when hnet de-conceal private keys are configured on the UDM, a deployment that does not configure those keys does not exercise parse_scheme_output(); the trade-off is that SUCI de-concealment for the home network is unavailable in that configuration. No other workaround is specified by the available sources, and the vendor positions this as a hardening-tier, read-only issue that causes no on-wire disclosure and no crash in practice, so prioritisation follows the 'this_month' decision label rather than emergency handling; the same advisory set also covers the distinct GHSA-vp44-3q85-5cm4 and GHSA-f4mx-3x6p-cfwp issues, which should be patched alongside this commit.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Open5GS is an open-source 5G core; its Service Based Interface (SBI) library handles SUCI de-concealment on the UDM, decoding the ECIES-style 'scheme output' that carries an ephemeral public key, cipher text and MAC tag (profile A/B) before deriving the MSIN. parse_scheme_output() in lib/sbi/conv.c sized its input with a uint8_t and guarded only against scheme_output_size <= (OGS_ECCKEY_LEN+1) + OGS_MACTAG_LEN (41), omitting OGS_MSIN_LEN (5). Because the check used <= against 41 rather than < against the real minimum of 42, a scheme output of exactly the minimum accepted length passed validation; the subsequent ogs_calloc(1, scheme_output_size), the cipher-text pointer pin at the old line 64 and the MAC-tag memcpy at the old line 75 then read 3 bytes (profile A) or 4 bytes (profile B) past the 42-byte allocation. The root cause class is CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read) with an integer-width/off-by-one validation defect. The upstream fix changes scheme_output_size to size_t and replaces the fixed-constant guard with scheme_output_size < ecckey->size + cipher_text->size + OGS_MACTAG_LEN, so the bound is derived from the actual parsed key and cipher-text sizes. This issue is distinct from GHSA-vp44-3q85-5cm4 (lib/core/ogs-conv.c, ogs_buffer_to_bcd) and GHSA-f4mx-3x6p-cfwp (conv.c:202/:66).

DescriptionCVE.org

Open5GS 2.6.1 through 2.8.0 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in parse_scheme_output() in lib/sbi/conv.c during SUCI de-concealment due to incomplete length validation. Remote unauthenticated UEs or SBI peers can submit a crafted SUCI with a 42-byte scheme output to a UDM, triggering a heap over-read past the buffer.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
