| Exploitation Conditions | Two specific prerequisites must BOTH hold, per the vendor advisory: (1) the imagepuller pull configuration must list both a concrete domain and its parent domain as a wildcard (e.g. 'registry.example.com' alongside '.example.com'); and (2) the wildcard entry's configuration - registry credentials, CA bundle, or mirror settings - must be unsuitable for the concrete registry. Exploitation is further limited to the 'workload operator' persona, and the metadata/mirror leak only matters if the audience permitted for the wildcard is positioned to attack the image pull at the network level (AV:A adjacent). The vendor explicitly states such overlapping configurations are very unlikely to exist in practice, since a root wildcard carrying credentials would itself be a risky setup. The flaw does not affect default configurations lacking overlapping concrete/wildcard registry entries. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 2.1 (Low) with AV:A/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L - adjacent vector, high complexity, a present attack requirement, and low privileges - and only a Low confidentiality impact (VC:L) with no integrity or availability impact. The vuln.today decision label is 'monitor', not act_now or emergency. There is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS value supplied, so widespread exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input but nothing suggests urgency. No public exploit code is referenced (only the GHSA and VulnCheck advisories, which are not PoC/exploit references). Critically, the vendor's own advisory states the triggering configuration is 'very unlikely to exist in practice' and that the advisory is relevant only to workload operators, not external attackers. The combined picture - low CVSS, monitor decision, no KEV/PoC, and a self-described improbable prerequisite - indicates this is a correctness/defense-in-depth fix rather than an actively dangerous flaw. The one caveat to verify: the impact is a credential/metadata leak, which can matter more than a 2.1 score implies if a high-value wildcard credential is involved, so operators using wildcard registry credentials should still patch. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A workload operator configures Contrast's imagepuller pull configuration with both a concrete registry (e.g. registry.example.com) and a parent wildcard (.example.com) whose credentials, CA bundle, or mirror settings are not appropriate for the concrete registry. Due to non-deterministic selection preferring the wildcard, the wildcard's credentials or pull metadata are applied to the concrete registry and leaked to the audience permitted for the wildcard - but only if that audience is positioned to attack the pull at the network level. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the vendor notes such a configuration is very unlikely in practice. |

Edgeless Systems Contrast releases 1.21.0 through 1.24.1 can apply a wildcard registry pull configuration to a concrete registry domain in the imagepuller guest component, potentially exposing registry credentials, CA bundles, or mirror/pull metadata to the wrong audience. The bug only matters in deployments whose pull configuration lists both a concrete domain and its parent domain as a wildcard AND where the wildcard's credentials, CA bundle, or mirror settings are unsuitable for that concrete registry - the vendor describes such overlapping setups as very unlikely in practice. Exploitation requires low privileges and adjacent network positioning, severity is low (CVSS 4.0 base 2.1; assessed CVSS 3.1 AV:A/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N), and no public exploit code has been identified; the issue is fixed in 1.25.0 and warrants routine monitoring rather than urgent action.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Edgeless Systems Contrast to 1.25.0, which resolves the flaw via PR #2682 by always preferring concrete matches over wildcard matches (advisory: https://github.com/edgelesssys/contrast/security/advisories/GHSA-w4p9-c7h8-jvgr). If upgrading cannot be done immediately, remove either exploitation prerequisite: replace the parent wildcard entry in the imagepuller pull configuration with an explicit list of concrete domains, or ensure any retained wildcard carries no registry credentials, CA bundle, or mirror settings that would be unsuitable if applied to a concrete child registry - the trade-off is that a wildcard with no credentials or CA material cannot authenticate pulls for genuinely wildcard-matched hosts, so those hosts must be enumerated explicitly. Because the residual metadata leak requires a network-positioned attacker permitted under the wildcard, restricting who can reach image-pull traffic on the adjacent network also reduces exposure. Deployments that never configured overlapping concrete and wildcard registry entries require no action beyond the version upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Contrast is a confidential-computing framework for Kubernetes, and its imagepuller is the guest-side component that fetches and verifies container images before they are handed to the workload. Operators supply a registry pull configuration that maps domain patterns to registry credentials, CA bundles, and mirror endpoints; these entries may be concrete (registry.example.com) or wildcard (*.example.com / .example.com). The selection routine was non-deterministic when both a concrete domain and its parent wildcard matched the same registry, allowing the wildcard entry to win. This is an instance of CWE-1289, Improper Validation of Unsafe Equivalence in Input: the matcher treated a less-specific wildcard entry as an acceptable equivalent for a more-specific concrete domain without enforcing most-specific-match precedence. The consequence is a confidentiality exposure only - a credential intended for the wildcard audience is presented to the concrete registry (if it passes the wildcard's CA restrictions), or the wildcard's CA bundle/mirror settings redirect pull metadata toward hosts permitted under the wildcard. Integrity and availability are unaffected, and default configurations without overlapping concrete/wildcard entries are not impacted; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:edgelesssys:contrast confirms the affected package is the Contrast distribution itself rather than a shared third-party library.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Edgeless Systems Contrast from 1.21.0 before 1.25.0 contains a non-deterministic registry selection flaw in imagepuller that can prefer wildcard configuration entries over concrete domain matches. When a pull configuration lists both a concrete domain and its parent wildcard, registry credentials, CA bundles, or mirror settings intended for the wildcard may be applied to the concrete registry, leaking credentials or pull metadata.
